Hi everyone

I was at a dealership yesterday poking about a CLS Shooting Brake that caught my eye. It has the premium pack meaning it gets a sunroof - not panoramic - just 'traditional' style.

It slides fine - retracted and closed fully with no problems - but wouldn't tilt (I assume you push the same button in the direction as you would to close it to then tilt it?), the sales chap stated that they don't tilt, but this doesn't sound right - can anyone confirm?

I may buy the car so if something is amiss I'd like to get them to acknowledge it and sort it.

Thanks guys, sounds like something needs reset or fixed then.

Headroom still seems ok, Im 5' 10" so not the tallest, and I have an irrational desire for a car with a sunroof, will just need to make sure I keep the drains clear and the seals looked after - as an ex-MX5 owner Im well practised.

Yip, tilts and slides, its a 3 way switch, back and forth but also up and down - really fking obvious when it was point out to us.

Sales chap didnt know either, took a bloke in a polo shirt emblazoned with 'product expert' to demonstrate that we were simpletons.

Car purchased, really happy with it, hope it doesnt bloody leak now...

Can't seem to get into my photobucket account to upload actual images but I bought this paint/wheel combo, with black leather, premium pack.

I'd had an S212 E220 CDI estate for coming up 5 years, loved it and was struggling with what to replace it with. I started looking at a nearly-new S213 version of exactly the same car, but there were a few things I didn't like - the half leather/half suede seats, the matt black wood looked cheap to me, and whilst the dash felt more modern it seemed a downward step in quality from the 212 (just like the 212 did from my old 211). e.g. dash and door trim seemed to flex and creak if you prodded and poked at it.

They weren't on my radar initially, but a CLS 220d Premium Shooting Brake popped up locally, just over a year old with only 8k miles on it, around half list price from new. Went to see it and it was immaculate, 30 mins later a deal was done.

Yes, I'd have loved the 350 engine, but I wasn't in the market to spend that kind of money. I wanted a replacement for the outgoing car, and the way I see it I've got a new car that looks stunning externally, feels nicer inside, rides and steers as well if not better, is nearly as practical, with a few extra toys (memory seats, sunroof, reversing camera) and was stonking value.

After previously owning cars with black paint and light coloured interiors and trying to keep them looking clean, I specifically wanted silver paint and black leather. Whilst some will consider it dull it's exactly what I wanted, and the sunroof helps brighten up the interior. I much prefer the black ash wood dash trim to the silver I had on the E-Class. I'm not the greatest fan of the 'ipad on the dash' infotainment screen, but then it doesn't bother me either.

It's the first time in a while I've found myself parking up my car and looking back admiringly at it.

What must someone be driving if they look at that and think it's dull!!!!

Mercedes have taken their best looking saloon and made it look even more sleek.

I don't think there is a colour I don't like these in.

As for the engine - yes, the 6 cylinders are a big step up from the 4 but the car is still very accomplished with the smaller engine.
More to do with the colour, for a long time silver with black leather seemed to be considered the 'safe resale' choice, but I think white and black seem to have taken up that mantle now. I do like black, I just can't be arsed with water spots, swirl-marks etc, they never seem to look clean for long.

I've never owned a silver car, but I think it works really well with the shooting brake bodystyle and multi-spoke wheels, and silver paint seems to age well.

I'd done nearly 50k miles in my outgoing E Class so know the 220 engine and gearbox combo really well and it's never let me down, I'd driven that car the length and breadth of the U.K., often fully loaded and it rarely felt lacking, even on multi-car A road overtakes.

Well we've had the car around a month now, no leaks from the sunroof (though no opportunity to open it either!) and we've had some pretty brutal rain up here North of the wall recently.

MPG on the 220d is about 42 overall but it's been mainly doing shorter journeys, and at 8k miles it still feels quite tight. If it's anything like my previous E Class with the same engine/box combo it'll loosen up and MPG will increase as the miles go on. I got 50MPG with ease on motorway journeys with that and expect to get the same with a CLS220d. Is 60MPG possible? I'm not sure, my 50MPG on motorway driving was mainly at higher cruising speeds so 60MPG might be possible if your right foot is feather-like. I only use the paddles on A/B road driving if I'm doing a bit of overtaking, on motorways it's full auto and relax.

Engine noise. Yes, the 220 is a bit harsh sounding, especially on a cold start, but that's from the outside. The soundproofing is a step above my S212 E Class and inside all I can hear is tyre noise, which is actually a bit intrusive from the wide P-Zeros this car has fitted. Which have also picked up a puncture already, at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon. Credit to my local Kwik Fit who stayed behind after closing to sort it, and were super careful with the wheels.

Power. I don't find it lacking, but a lot of that is perhaps relative to what you're used to. Day to day I listen to the sweet hum of a 10yr old 1.9 tdi PD engine so hopping into the CLS220 feels like a luxury bullet-train. For those of you that tried it after a 63-engined car it's understandably not going to cut the mustard.

Boot. I got an excellent non-slip boot liner from Germany via a popular online auction site, for £28 delivered. It's tailored for the CLS Shooting Brake and fits perfectly. I'd imagine dog vomit would hose right off. smile
