Hi guys,

My Dad has been trying to sell his w140 S600 (1998) for some time now, but without any takers. It's hardly being used and is just costing to insure and tax, so it really has to go - it's going on eBay next week.

Problem is, as there weren't that many of them made, we're finding it hard to price. I know cars of this age and engine size have taken a battering recently, but it would be great to get ideas of what you guys thought to be a fair price/reserve for it.

It's Obsidian black and has got full Mercedes service history and has about 120k on the clock. Pretty much every extra and in nice condition throughout.

So, any ideas on what it's likely to fetch?

This picture was taken last year, but gives you an idea:

Cheers

Edited as I overestimated the mileage - 117k not 140k!

Cheers for all the replies guys. It is indeed the LWB variety. The reason for sale is simply that it doesn't get used enough any more - my Dad used to do a lot of long motorway journeys which this car is brilliant at. However, now he doesn't do these massive journeys he has replaced it with a Golf 1.6 as a runaround and has a Jaguar XKR for fun. It's just sitting on the drive not really being used at the moment and that seems criminal!

As for the wheels - although they're not stock, I believe they were a factory fit option at the time. I think they're 17" AMGs, but don't have the original spec sheet with me at the moment so not able to check. There's a better picture of them here if any Merc enthusiast might be able to identify them?

Yup, these wheels are definately not original W140 series alloys. They are genuine Mercedes alloys, and from an S-Class, but from the next generation W220 S-Class and also used on the C215 CL-Class.
But they are not AMG alloys.
Are you sure they are 17"? They look more like 18" to me scratchchin

Ah, it's good to know what they actually are - cheers Darren. I think they suit the car quite nicely (even if they're not OEM)

Not at home for a little while, so will have to look if they are 17 or 18" when I get back on Tuesday.

Having just moved house we don't yet have any outbuildings in which it could be stored (and won't for a good few years). If we did, then we'd just put it in storage for the next 20 years! But as it stands, it's in very nice condition so both my Dad and I would rather it went to a nice new home than just sitting on our drive, not getting the use it deserves.

...plus, it's getting harder to convince Mum that three people really need five cars!cry

Just to let you know that this car is running lovely, and has a newly painted front end which looks great. Mercedes Enthusiast have done a full feature on it which should be out either next month or the one after. Had 2 coil packs go in succesion on different cylinders, apart from that no problems.
Wow, I'm going to have to look out for that issue. Will be really interesting to read all about it and see what it looks like now. Sorry to hear about the coil packs, but glad you're still enjoying it!

Now out in the June 2009 issue.....
bounce

Should make for good reading. Says on the Mercedes Enthusiast website that the magazine comes out the third Friday of each month....which should mean tomorrow for the June edition.

I've got a few pictures of the inside from a year or so back. Though I'm sure Mercedes Enthusiast will do a much better job showcasing it!

Just to say that it is over a year since I got this car, still running great, new MOT just passed with no advisories.....
Good to hear you're still enjoying her and that she's ticking along nicely. I can't think of a classier or better made car for the money.

To think that in 2008, a 10 year old S600 went for £2900. On Auto Trader now, there's only one 2012- 4l+ S-Class under £25k!
Yeah, prices of these w140s are creeping up. I'm really glad to see it's still being taken care of, as I've got such fond memories of riding in this car as a kid and it still has incredible road presence today.

I saw on another thread that there was a question re: whether the rear V12 badges were placed too high - and it's very possible. When we bought the car, it was totally de-badged with no S600 badge on the rear or V12 badges on the sides. So we asked the Mercedes dealer to refit them at the next service, and I suspect they placed them a little higher than factory.
