Classic Range Rover must have had about four or five genuine facelifts (limited editions aside).

They are not facelifts.

Isn't it the same chassis underneath?

Indeed. I'd very much call them facelifts.

Christ. Why do so many people on here not understand the meaning of a 'facelift'? Happens all the time with these type of threads..

I'll go with the R230 SL, facelifted 2 times.

My definition of a refresh/facelift is when the original chassis is retained. I appreciate the F30 had numerous changes but underneath is the E90 shell and suspension.

No, not between the S1 and S2 despite similar methods of construction. The S2 and the later car is mostly the same but subframes are different. However, the model range and options were broadened which means these days they share little except the name of the 2001MY car.

OK, thanks.

Probably, still isn't a facelift though. Most 'new' generation/phase/mark of cars have the same underpinnings, but are technically new models.

Whilst I'd argue that some new models are simply face lifts! The Escorts being a prime example. Mk3 + Mk4 are pretty much facelifts, as are the Mk5 + Mk6, but all marketed as new models!

Is the Bentley Continental not very VERY partial to a facelift. It's been in production since 2003. There is a "second generation" but was that nothing more than a facelift, focussed on the interior?

ETA - Just looked and surely this is the winner, unless of course the second gen was a significantly new model, but I am pretty sure it was not in terms of chassis.

Not sure where that came from - but the F30 is a new design, completely different dimensions etc.

Vw beetle. Of course you can't transplant a 1949 model onto a 77 model. But through most of the 50's to 70's a lot of bits could be changed between cars. Biggest change was the curved windscreen and suspension on the 1303 model in the 70's

Of course Vw own adverts joked about nothing ever changing yr to yr.

I found the chassis hard points and suspension locations were the same, and the suspension components too (shock/spring rate and bush hardness were changed). Some examples:

Front suspension - E90 (in hand) vs F30

Rear subframe - E90

Rear subframe - F30

The Ford Cortina from 1970 Mk3 to 1982 80. There was the original MK3, followed by a facelift MK3 in 1974, followed by the MK4 and then the Cortina 80.

L322 Range Rover is a good one. For me it got better each time. There's tons of examples of this, right down to odd things like the Peugeot 206, 206 facelift and then 206+.

By that logic the Exige S1 and S2 are also Elise's as they have the same chassis....

Or anything from the VW Group eg: Polo to Ibiza to Fabia... same chassis, different cars
