Gas works in street

The gas company themselves probably won't be doing the work - it's normally subbed out. So ask the subbies how much THEY will charge to stick the meter where you want. They will just report back that your old meter couldn't be connected to and they had to fit a new one/move the old one.
Cool. Understood...!robwilk said:

Just curious - why would somebody nick a gas meter?
Some people will have their proper meter that they use for a couple of days, then swap in a nicked meter for the rest of the month, or whatever. You also can not turn meters around due to the same reason it would not work.
People used to steal meters to fit them so as not to run up large bill on the correct meter.
Its not just to measure how much gas you use.
If they need to move a meter to the front of the house, do I have any say as to where it goes?
I'd like it tucked away on the side but I suspect that will involve some digging etc and not sure how keen they'd be to do that
Or do they just stick it at the most convenient (for them) place?

Eventually there'll be so much subconning that one Eastern European bloke will do every job in the whole utility sector.
They've started the work. It looks eye wateringly expensive to do this work. Loads of plant and machinery. Loads of engineers.
I've just remembered that there is a 90 degree turn in my pipe where it goes from underground level and turns up about 1.5m to where the meter is situated. I'm hoping this is too great an obstacle for them to overcome and they have to resite my meter without me having to serve tea and biscuits. I will of course serve tea and biscuits anyway when they're working on my pipe but you know what I mean..

After all that, turns out my gas pipe had already been replaced when the meter was moved by previous owner and so nothing needed to be done. Not even a cup of tea could persuade the dude to arrange for meter movement to the front wall which was what I was hoping for.
Hey ho
Extension will have to be designed around existing location of meter

They will move it for you, if you pay.
Very much this. We remodelled our utility room, which left the meter stuck on the wall about 5 feet off the ground (some cupboards were removed) and we paid about £1k to move it to the front wall of the house, in a position of our choosing. then about another £250 to have their indoor team connect it all back up - but this made sure it was all done on the same day.Yes - it was quite a lot of money, but the surveyor kindly under-measured (it was probably closer to the "over 5m" move, which would have been £1.5k. I balked at the time, but I'm really glad we did it now - you forget how much it cost, but we would have resented the meter staying where it was.
