This picture intrigues me not for the reason you'd think but knowing the width of the sills on this type of SL what do we think her chances of getting in are?
That is just the hotel porter bringing out the luggage.
Which hotel asking for a friend obviously

Good morning all, checking in for another rollicking (yet comfortable and refined, naturally) volume.

Already some great offerings from the world of the used barge.

That CLK55 looks good value.

I think this is rather nice...and possibly within a haggle of the top of thread. 135k miles and £5750
2004 CLK55 with the 5.4 V8. So it should be quick enough for most occasions....

.What colour is this, some sort of purple or blue?

Possibly Mystic Blue? That's my best guess.

I would enquire as to whether the engine and gearbox mounts have been replaced.

How much do we think this is going to go for? Perhaps answer in multiples of £1,200. The dealer seller is asking £16,995 elsewhere which seems a tad optimistic but my-oh-my what a beautiful car. I really fancy it. Incredibly rare "SEC-style" seating, a £1,987.76 option back in the day. Bagsy first dibs.

Phwoar. Big fan.

I wonder if these will end up as expensive as older Merc barges? Or will they be outlawed by that point?
What a macheeen!

But not at 20 grand f f s.

I’ll take the 1 and a half bag 3litre Mondeo, please.
That W126 is bloody lovely and nearly twenty bags is almost worth it for the individual rear seats but really, that really is pricy.

Further to the Bornite 300E from the last volume, you could have a newer E320 S124 needing a bit of TLC for 3/4 thread, also in Bornite. Ad looks honest enough - seller knows what he's talking about and gets extra points in my book for not using the phrase "last of the proper Mercs" or "built by engineers not accountants" or other such twaddle. Sportline chassis too.

dapster, is that you in disguise?! The seller must be a bargeiste, Shirley. If a lurker and reading this... reveal yourself good sir!

smile Yes, that was mine. It was an amazing car which we had for around 5 years with many happy memories. We were all sad to see it go, but I was delighted with the price it sold for (as mentioned above, I sold through Collecting Cars for just under £8k - buyer paying a c.£600 fee). The buyer seemed very happy with it and seemed be suggesting he'd keep it for a long while. Next thing I spotted it up at this dealer for £9k (or was it more?) with the towbar removed. I assumed somebody was aiming to flip it, but now that it's down at £7k, who knows?

Thread is on great form - I'm more of a lurker these days as a sad ex-barge owner.

For those who are interested, my GR Yaris is getting well-used, mostly in a very un-bargelike way!

Good stuff Rejn. I've heard that they are over-gripped for the road and essentially too capable. What's your view?

On another note, I cannot locate Macron's earlier post with the ST220 estate with DKR interior (to quote our resident member of Norfolk's Mountain Rescue team), but I do like a fast Ford. However, they do conjure up images of people that wear very relaxed cut jeans with hoodies. I prefer a tapered cut.

Well, despite many a forever lost hour spent perusing the usual suspects in the vain hope of an affordable alternative for my aging and rusting E39 estate I have come to the conclusion that they are either;

A. Unaffordable
B. Bork-tastic
C. Both of the above
D. An as yet unknown unicorn that is none of the above and that should it be discovered will be jumped on like tramps on a sandwich.

Whilst not exactly thread tone, as in, I'm not buying another barge, I decided to explore the possibility of tidying my old barge up a little. Ten years of my ownership of what was once considered an exotic, fast and rare germanic estate has reduced it, accelerated through daily use, work wagon-ness and never a day spent sheltering in a garage from a once gleaming and desirable Alpina B10 V8 Touring to just another feather edged and tired looking old E39 estate. I should add I have invested reasonably good amounts getting it so that mechanically, electrically and dynamically it works pretty damn well - it just looks like every other sad rusty E39 estate with 2/3rds moon mileage on it.

I therefore went with a friend, to meet a friend of a friend, who apparently runs a little cottage business doing a little bit of bodywork restoration and re-spraying. So whilst the quietly spoken and studious proprietor/owner/dogsbody/sole employee looked around my tired old heap I prepared myself to ask the two key questions;

1. How much?
2. Can I see something you've sprayed recently?

The 'how much' was thankfully within the scope of my budget and anxious anticipation, however the second question elicited some embarrassment on my part as said quiet and thoughtful man pulled back the door on a Ferrari 330 GT which he had just finished putting back together eek

It was a masterpiece, a flawless beautiful diamond of a car and fabulously and meticulously restored by a man who was now inexplicably agreeing to take on my dirty, rusty, tired german pebble.

The 'man' will take my car, and my money, and hopefully give me back a small gem of a car, pretty as picture again, as well as affording me many future free hours where I should not have to seek its replacement at a silly inflated covid price and with many a modern hidden borkage.
Your collection of BM’s has been aspirational, not least the ‘34……if you don’t mind, I’m going to pm you about this chap, I have need in the next 6 months for some paintwork on my recent 34 purchase, and I think I’m reasonably close to you

I think it's one of the best cars I've ever driven. I've been lucky enough to drive a whole variety of exotic cars over the years, but there's very little that's more capable cross-country. The way it gets power down, and the grip it generates are incredible. I over-took pretty much everything at Castle Combe (including a McLaren 720S - twice!). The stats of then Yaris (size/power/etc) are about the same as a 993, but the technology (and tyres) and obviously generations newer.

Does it have too much grip - and therefore is it not playful enough? Maybe, but I'd much rather have the extra grip: in reality that does mean you're always inside the capabilities of the car when driving on the road. On track, you can reach the limits, at which point (and with everything switched off), it behaves exactly as you'd want - with a bit of left-foot braking or a small lift you can get the car to turn in at amazing speeds (at this point you'd beyond the levels of grip, so it can feel pretty exciting), and then you can give it 100% throttle out of the corner - it's an amazing feeling. I only did about 3 hours at full chat on the track day and stopped mid-afternoon as my brain was too tired.

In terms of down-sides, I could see how if you'd come from an expensive car, bits of the Yaris feel cheap, but that doesn't fuss me particularly; and some people might find it not very comfortable, and the controls are a bit clunky at slow speed - but I love the mechanical feel of everything - if you don't concentrate you can crunch the gears, or 2nd gear can feel a bit notchy, but that actually adds to the motorsport feel for me.

As you can tell, I love it!

yes though sadly I don't use it much now - I took it out recently and it felt a bit flabby and slow by comparison. I sense it may not stay in the fleet too much longer frown

Viewing this CLK 320 on Saturday down the road from me. Good history and post dates the end of the dodgy Valeo radiators that plagued early models. Thoughts?

Looks good. I recall you work/worked for a Merc dealer so you probably know much more about this than me. If I were looking at it, I'd take the engine cover off to check for cam cover/breather oil leaks; note that the cats can fail and thus consider any rasping/rattling from the exhaust to be an expensive sound and I'd also ask when the gearbox fluid was last changed. I'm not sure if they had resolved the HVAC stepper motor issue by '04, perhaps not as the facelift was in '05. I recall that mwstewart, who has had a number of CLKs expresses a preference for the facelift versions, but in a petrol V6 that forces you into an M272.
