Shotgun?

Anyway, I don't think this has been mentioned yet but is a popular Urbex sight.. Clipstone Colliery and Headstocks are just wonderful piece of history and industrial building. Now stood derilict.

(not my pic)

wiki said said:
The headstocks of the colliery are regarded as the tallest in Europe and the third tallest in the world. They are Grade 2 Listed structures and can be seen all over the district. They are expensive to keep in good repair and there have been a number of appeals, as yet to no avail, to demolish them. But however the clipstone headstocks are nearly demolished now and no one knows what will happen in the future.
As always there is a threat of them being torn down.

My urbexing partner lives almost next door to these and we have set up an Action Group which is going to apply for the Heritage Lottery fund so we can buy them and restore the headstocks. Then also use the building for museum/community/education centre. If anyone is interested and wants to help out the first public meeting is being held at the end of Jan.

Yes indeed- there are some near me back east towards the desert. I've been meaning to go take a look at some. Would love to make an old aircraft into a home!
I'd be down there in a shot. Nothing as interesting as that in the UK......
Nope, I think the Lightning on the A1 is the closest. Looks like my road trip now includes America as well as Russia.

I would imagine living in one would be a tad draughty though laugh
You've probably seen it already, but I'm always amazed at the vastness of the Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona. Thousands upon thousands of every type of plane you could imagine in a derelict/semi-dismantled state. Sad yet fascinating.

Get in Google maps, just on the south-east edge of the town/city.

here is just a bit of it
I've been on the guided tourbus around Davies-Monthan. Tis awesome
I went past the Pinal Airfield when i drove from Phoenix to Tucson, purposely looked out for this one though, i don't know how i missed it!!! Shocking on vast that place is though.

Greenham air base, as was, after the fence was taken down. No one is quite sure why one fence post was left standing.

The protesters who camped out at Greenham wanted the missiles removed; so the missiles went. They wanted the USAF gone; so they went too. They wanted Greenham Common returned to common land; so it was. They wanted the common land put back in such a condition that the common people could graze their cattle; so new fences and cattle grids were installed. About two years later the last two protesters left.

The main runway has gone but it's not difficult to see where it was. (It's just behind the cow as a matter of interest.) It doesn't seem that long ago that you could see USA 1 there during a Presidential visit to the UK.

Quick piccy of an abandoned model village I stumbled upon while exploring.

Very cool and creepy place, hidden in a wooded area. There's a Disney type castle as well.

Showed the pictures to my Mum and Dad a while ago and they remember the place and took me there when I was a child. They're going to try and dig out a photo of me playing on that giant boot.

I had the chance to walk around the various underground floors and passages at Salts Mill years ago. That was pretty cool and some bits a little disturbing. Shame Ive got no pics but if for whatever reason you get the chance to...

Another EnglishRussia link.

Appears to be a pic of possible bomber threats. Would that be a B52, Vulcan and F 111?

ETA - scanning the Secret Scotland website, I stayed here as a CCF cadet, must have been '96 or '97. Looking back, it was a great week.

When and where were those taken?

I reckon the superbird even in it's "current state" is worth around the $10K mark.
Not sure, I just typed in "Abandoned Mustang" and found site with pics on. I think the Plymouth is from 2009?

Anyone in the Basingstoke - Alton area seen the small collection of aviation stuff abandoned near the perimeter of Lasham airfield?
Damn, If I had the money I'd buy that roadrunner. Even at 10k. 10k for the base car, let's be pessimistic and say 100k to restore it and you're still looking at a circa 100k profit. (all dooooolars of course)

I used to live next to Greenham Common and aside from going on the base to go bowling and socialize with the Americans, we used to fly model airplanes from the main runway. It wasn't uncommon to have full size movements whilst we were flying models on the same runway. To be asked to move onto the grass whilst a Herc took off right by us was a sight to be seen!

It was a tragedy that the runway was destroyed, the authorities were determined to reduce the site to a field, only leaving the centre point where the runways met. That crossing can still be seen as a memento as can the tower and bunkers (which I understand need to be left so they can be inspected by the Russians as and when). Greenham could have been a good local airport, bearing in mind the length of runway, it could take the largest of aircraft which included the space shuttle if need be.

Progress I suppose frown

If I was stood on the main runway with a B52 approaching I think I would have a full size movement too, but I wouldn't be able to run afterwards!

On the one hand was a small market town in middle England and on the other a large, busy, well equipped, well manned, USAF base during the Cold War.

On one occasion an American sentry left his post to walk along the road on the outside of the perimeter fence to investigate a car that had been left on the verge. As he was peering into it, rifle at the ready, the local bobby cycled up and asked what he was doing. The soldier told the Policeman that the car posed a threat to US military and wasn't the concern of the British authorities. The Policeman told the soldier that he had come across a man carrying an unlicensed firearm on the Queen's Highway and was going to have to arrest him. The soldier weighed the consequences of all this in his mind and legged it back down the road to his post inside the fence as fast as he could.
