All this talk of Renault 25 this and Renault Sarane that and no-one's brought this up?

Ah, the Renault Vel Satis, well if you want to bring that up I raise you the Renault Avantime. I actually saw one once on the road.

I saw one just recently, and as usual it was blue.

Lovely looking 131 Sport and thanks for posting the picture. Fiats and Lancia’s of the late 70’s and early 80’s were in my opinion streets ahead of the mainstream competition.

Whilst they did rust (the 132 seemed to be less susceptible then the 131), nearly all cars of the era suffered a similar rust fate.
On the subject of Italian rustbuckets, let us not forget the Lancia Trevi. Much like the Fiat 132, size wise it seemed to occupy that niche between Cortina and Granada albeit more plushly furnished than the offerings from the blue oval.

There was even a supercharged Volumex version for the masochists who wanted an extra dose of fun on top of the Italian electrics and tinworm.

Great shout - and don't forget the bonkers dashboard!

Happy memories, both my dad and my brother had trevis in the late 80s /early 90s I remember being taken to school in one of those - it was the first car we ever had with a sliding sunroof

Vanden Plas 4 litre R. Extremely plush and thirsty. They all seemed to rust furiously around the front bulkhead and sag. Then disappeared overnight when the 1970s fuel crisis arrived.

And it had one of the best ever disguised petrol filling cap!

Not a Super Snipe, but the first car I recall my father having was a Hawk and that also had the hidden filler cap. He would often have to go and show the attendant at the filling station where it was.

Complete with an 8 year old Hex.

The same VDP was used in 'Robbery' in 1967....

I saw one a while ago, looking rather small and delicate among the modern tin.

I've watched the film so many times it just jumped out at me wink

Did the old Bill ever use any VDPs as transport for high ranking officers, alongside their more usual black Wolseleys in that period...?

That dashboard is a candidate for peak 80s. Unless you prefer LCD.

Your late Father clearly had a very good taste in cars. I remember at age 19 my Uncle letting me drive his 92 Thema Turbo 16 Valve. It was a great car.

My Dad maintains the Thema was the fastest car he’s ever driven and he’s owned an XJ40 3.0, XF 3.0D and drove my E46 330i Sport many times.

Looking at the original picture again, the gent getting in the car looks link Patrick McNee, of Avengers fame. It is.

It was also used the Avengers, along with some other interesting cars.

Drove a few Cromas (originals) back in the early 90's when my Fiat was in for repairs or service - the dealer would just give out the keys to the closest car. I seem to recall the 1.8i and 2.0 being particularly nice places to be in. (At least for a few hours).

There can't be many left now though?

SD.

I remember going to the motorshow with my dad back in the late 80's and one particularly memorable highlight was queuing up for and then sitting in the Ferrari engined Thema 8.32 on the Lancia stand. The interior was amazing

I have a vague recollection of Ford attempting to flog these Australian LTD's in the UK in the early 1980s at a price point above the Granada. Not very successfully.

I saw an elderly couple picnicking alongside the car behind that yesterday!
