Winter and wet weather running:

Firstly, bodyglide...... Just on the nipples but it's a godsend
A good base layer. mine of choice is Nike Pro but one which clings to me and wicks sweat away
- Running pants - again Nike Pro for me and only used in very cold weather
- socks - features - made for running
- shorts - until it gets very cold I always wear shorts but have some tights ..... get a zip pocket on them
- gloves - various thicknesses but I have some thin gloves which I sometimes use with a thicker pair on top once it gets down to 0C
- Hat - only if it's cold (0C or below)
- Tops, thin layer on top of the base layer.....
- jacket - not really worth it although I would quite like the look of the skins one in the posts above
- shoes - rotate so I never wear the same show 2 days running in winter
- bodytorch - I have one from Decathlon which has a rear red light as well. It means it's not on my head which I prefer. Was about £40

Pretty much the same as The Jiffle King here.

Within the city, short-sleeve top and shorts are fine til about 5C. Below that, long-sleeve top and leggings. Thin hat and gloves make a big difference. Everything from Decathlon. In light rain, I get wet. In heavy rain, I stay on the sofa and run tomorrow. Different story if I was hill running of course, full waterproof cover is mandatory for most races nowadays.

Hill shoes for deep snow. Invested in some Nanospikes to put on my road shoes - am yet to try them, but they should help with the awkward January mix of solid ice patches and clear gritted tarmac.

I started running about 3 months ago, I do 5K a day (Mon - Fri), times vary from 23mins to 26mins.

My issue is my knee.

In 2017 I decided to make the most of the snow on a Friday night while pissed! I wasn't ready for the sledge to go and my boot stuck in the ground, my leg rotated and I heard a pop, it hurt like hell!

The next day it was swollen up like a balloon.

Went to Dr's who referred me to physio, by the time I saw them all was well.

After about 3 weeks of running the pain I had back then returned, I'm awaiting an MRI scan.

I don't want to stop running as it's been the best thing ever from a mental health POV, the weight loss has been an added bonus.

Any advice anyone can offer?

The scan could take months/years to come through with the current situation.

Cheers

Vary your running more than you do at present, both pace and distance
Do some strength exercises for your knee (youtube is a good source of info)
Vary the surface you run on, does it hurt less if running off road for example

My wife has had an mri recently took about 6 weeks from initial consultation to the scan

on top of the above, get a running gait analysis with a view to seeing if you over or under pronate and to what extent, then look at getting custom insoles on foot of this. and try stretching a couple of times a day even on days when you dont run. look also at the runners you are wearing, are they off the shelf or ones which where recommended upon a proper analysis. There are alot of variables but alot you can do yourself.

Looking for some advice please. I think I’ve injured my left foot worse than I thought, it’s possibly extensor tendonitis (from my Googling). I’m wondering if anyone has had similar or knows better than I do? The sensation/mild discomfort runs across the top of my foot more towards my big toe and the right hand side but not down the side of my foot/arch. My left shoes feel a little so it might be a little swollen but not noticeably so. I can walk fine on it and my pace is the same when running I’m just concerned about making it worse.

When it started I had two weeks off of running, back to a few runs and I can start to feel it. It’s not enough to make me stop, but after 2kms I can start to feel it making itself known. It’s more like a presence/twinge than a pain but I figured if it’s come back it’s bad. Is it possible it’s a stress fracture, or are those really painful? I did feel a slight twinge up the front of my leg once but that’s not come back.

I’m hoping to start training for the Brighton Marathon soon.

I’ve changed my rotation of shoes (had a few runs in the vaporflys) and my running style to be less of a heel striker a while ago, but noticed this first occur when wearing an older pair of shoes during bad weather. I feel like that was probably my mistake.

I thought two weeks would be enough to recover, I’m dreading it but thinking better to be safe than sorry and take a month off.
My advice FWIW...

1. Get it properly diagnosed by a good physio
2. Do the rehab exercises diligently
3. Unless directed to by the physio, do not take a month off - it's the worst thing that you can do! You need o progressively load injuries to maintain strength or it will come straight back when you run again
Thank you, sorry for the late reply.
It’s much appreciated. Physio sounds a good idea, I’m going to see what’s offered through our work schemes. If not I’ll go private.

Hi All,

My Nike Pegasus are starting to wear, and looking at replacement Pegasus, the £110 cost is putting me off.

I require a neutral running shoe with good levels of cushioning for longish runs (e.g. up to 10k). I also do a lot of hill work, primarily on asphalt. My feet are size 10, narrow and have normal arches.

I was initially looking at shoes that give the same running feel as Pegasus, but I am open to shoes that have a little more cushioning. So far I have considered the following:
New Balance Vongo
New Balance 1080
Brooks Launch 7
Brooks Ghost

Any advice from you guys greatly appreciated.

I will add Asics Cumulus 22's to your list. I think 23's are out now but I'm very happy with the 22's, not excessively squishy soft but a good balance between cushion and giving a secure fit. I also rotate with Cumulus 21's...again good fit for my wider foot and secure collar but a bit too firm in the ride IMO.
I'm also a Mizuno Waverider fanboy but my old 21's are giving me issues so maybe time to retire soon.

Loch Ness marathon tomorrow, the only marathon to come with a free Baxter's soup (at least, I assume that Paris doesn't...)

I got the Vongos a few months ago and have been running in them for about two months. They replaced a pair of Hoka Arashi

I really like the Vongos. They are light and feel well cushioned. The top is stretchy and there isn't a tongue, which i like as they usually have a tendency to slide off centre on my feet. The only concern i have is longevity, but i hope to get roughly a year out of them (about 750 miles)

I've had 1080s before a few times, and rate those too. Only issue was that when i was buying the 1080s were £120 whereas i got the Vongos for £65

See if you can get the reebok floatride 2 in your size, for the money (40ish) you can't go wrong imo.

Failing that I have some nova blast they are very cushioned and can be pretty quick once your used to them!

I would be trying to get 2 pairs of shoes for £110 there's some decent sales atm

Long shot... But, anyone doing "Lakes in a Day" on Saturday in, urm, The Lakes? Just asking because misery loves company. :-)

I was out yesterday testing my equipment and loadout for the event, wet and wild and hoping for similar weather next weekend.

Good stuff! Yep, Loch Ness at the weekend - bit of scenery, lots of weather, few hills, a new PB - a good day out!

My kids are doing the Paris Marathon. My son, younger daughter and her husband.
Daughter has been having big reservations about it so I have volunteered to join in and run with her. I think she is more than capable but just needs moral support.
I have been running 3 times a week for ages and am doing 2 x 10km and occasional 1 x 5 km and occasionally 1/2marathon distance in just over 2 hrs and always feeling fairly comfortable at the end.
I am hoping that plodding along at a slow pace will not be too great a challenge.

My question is that, when I do the 21km distance I usually take water in a Camel pack but have never taken anything to eat. Is that essential and if so what is best?
