Ferrari Says 'No' To Electric Cars...

...But hybrids are most definitely on the cards

Generally speaking, company bosses - and particularly bosses of car manufacturers - are as efficient at answering an awkward question without answering it as any politician. Even when caught on the hop.

Not Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, however - he's a bit more forthright than that. And good on 'im, we say.

"You will never see a Ferrari electric because I don't believe in electric cars," he told Engadget. "I don't think they represent an important step forward for pollution or CO2 or the environment."

Hybrid Ferraris, on the other hand, no doubt using the technology first showcased just before the 2010 Geneva motor show, are high on di Montezemolo's agenda: "We are working very, very hard on the hybrid Ferrari. This should be the future, and I hope in a couple of years you can see it."

Damn right. All your doing with electric cars is moving the problem - into disposable nasty batteries. About time other companies grew a pair and acted accordingly.

He's right; electric cars will never be a truly viable option. Hybrids will be a useful stop-gap until a genuine, viable replacement for petrol/diesel comes along - hydrogen perhaps.

I'm far from a champion of EVs, but this kind of comment makes me laugh. I dare say that people said the same about the IC engine back in the day, and I know they did about the steam train before that. You can't possibly know with certainty.

Exactly, I've been running an electric Ferrari for ages and it really hangs on in the corners + goes like stink when you wind the amps up. It's a bit of a bugger if you want to turn right or left though

bit of a daft answer....'no we hate electric cars eeere but we love electric hybrid petrol cars' doh!!

Is he saying Ferrari will never have electric cars? How on earth can he know? Lets say in 50 years Ferrari is still around (lets hope so) and electric is the only choice ('m assuiming by then we've fixed the battery issue) whats Ferrari going to do.

What he perhaps meant was 'we don't believe electric cars in their current (geddit?) format are a worthwhile propositon, but in the future who knows...'

Dumbest comment from a supercar manufacturer. Petrol is finite, electricity is renewable. Bet they will change their mind on that!

Well done Luca!

Electric cars are cobblers. They are not the future, and have in fact been around for a hundred years - they have never worked.

Hydrogen fuel cells are the way forward, but not sure why any luxury car manufacturer would be even looking at this solution. If you can afford a Ferrari, you can afford petrol, and as long as the specialist car "population" all have catalyctic converters (with more improvements to petrol engine's green credentials on the way), the damage to the environment will be negligible.

No use having a Ferrari or a race bike when they have to spool up everytime they need to make power, which takes ages, compared to electric.

Actually, electric cars have been around for quite a bit more than 100 years. Electric cars actually pre-date the internal combustion engine.

As far as Di Montezelo's comment, seems kind of backwards. Surely hybrids are simply a stop-gap before full-on electric cars become viable?

Either way, I'm sure Enzo would approve of him saying "no" to full electrics, but he probably wouldn't approve of a "hybrid" Ferrari.

Nail on the head there the electric car is coming like it or not . It's a not for me but unfortunately if I want to stay in the motortrade game I know have to re train for electric cars .once companie cars switch to electric cars so they don't have the fuel costs any more the rest will become history ps Nissan leaf batteries are £5k and most manufactures will rent the batteries out
