New 911 GT3 spied

First shots of new hardcore Porsche hit the web

The new 991-generation 911 might have only just been launched, but already spy shots of the hardcore GT3 variant have surfaced on the netweb.

The pictures, taken by German mag Auto Motor und Sport clearly show bespoke bumpers front and rear, as well as a fixed rear spoiler and twin central exhaust pipes.

Other details for the new GT3 are sketchy, but expect power to be close to the 450hp achieved by the 997 GT3 RS, and a weight reduction over its predecessor of around 40kg.

PH also talked to a senior engineer on the 991 project, who confirmed that Porsche will use the Carrera's electric power steering set-up on the GT3.

We're pretty sure that will prove a controversial move for such a 'purist' machine, but we shall no doubt find out whether it works or not when the car hits the streets in 2013...

See the shots on Auto Motor und Sport's website here

Hard to see too much difference in black but it still looks cool.

I'm lost how many variants are there now?

Should have phrased this differently what I really meant was how many 991 vaiants are there going to be at any one time. Carrera 4S, GT2, GT3, GT3 RS...

Not in this generation, but it'll happen in the end.

Sorry, I was being a bit pedantic! The truth is at this stage, we don't know exactly what will be launched. The rumours say that things will be named differently when it comes to the 'GT' 991 cars, so they may not follow the same naming conventions as the 996 / 997 ranges.

There will most likely be:
Carrera (C2)
Carrera S (C2S)
Carrera 4 (C4)
Carrera 4S (C4S)
Turbo

The GT3 is rumoured to be called 'RS', harping back to the air cooled days. There will most likely be a road based and track based version of that car. Perhaps RS Touring and RS Clubsport?

There will probably be a turbo version of the RS (GT2 equivalent) a couple of years later.

there's going to be a hybrid between the N/A and the turbo lump IIRC and no doubt other special editions which the marketing dept will come up with - they do it for every generation of car

sounds like a backwards step as they've had three types of GT3 and now will only be offering two

Adding the Cup and Super Cup in there isn't really sensible given they're fully fledged racing cars. That's like adding the 458 Challenge to the 458 lineup.

Pretty much any car could be made road legal, if you really wanted to tongue out

No hybrids on this platform apparently, well according to this month's evo article.

It'll be interesting to see how well the GT3 is received now it is using a 'regular' 911 engine.

On a sidenote, how fabulous does this look-

(Courtesy of Auto Motor & Sport)

Presumably a regular 911 body hiding the GT3's running gear.

It'll certainly be in the running once released, but I don't see Porsche getting the GT3 out before late 2013/early 2014.

I'm rather excited, given how the GT3 RS 4.0 has been received smile

Looks MUCH better with those purposefull wheels rather than those big 20" posing charriots that the current press cars are running ON.
