I'll look forward to hearing how it was as I would love to eat at the Waterside. The OH and I went to Le Gavroche earlier this year and if that's anything to go by, Waterside would be as good and then some I would have thought. We're doing The Fat Duck in March but I nearly insisted on Waterside instead.

I did read somewhere that the Waterside is very dated inside but I wonder if it's more that someone didn't 'get' that it's not meant to be glass, stainless steel and wood floors everywhere.

Prepare to be disappointed frown

Take a look at some of the comments on Andy Hayler's website andyhayler.com which mostly fit with my experience.

The worst thing though, was the fact that they relaxed the strict dress code for a bunch of innits who turned up in a couple of maybachs in hoodies and their arses hanging out of their jeans.

Quite honestly, my local 1* place is better.

It's interesting that Andy Hayler visited Restaurant Sat Bains in May this year, gave it 6/10 and a not particularly good write up and then, Sat is given his second star very soon after.

I had to look for a link twice before I saw it, to be fair, if he's on an iPad it wouldn't make andyhayler.com into a link without the http:// or www. prefix, it was just plain text for me.

To be fair though, it's not the most consistent of places - some clearly likes it, but it's the only Michelin starred restaurant I've dined at where I've asked for the service charge to be removed (food wasn't great either). Andy's write up makes it sound like somewhere you might go back to... mine wouldn't.

I've been to the Waterside Inn several times in the last few years and have always found the food and service to be top notch.

The place may have fallen out of favour with some restaurant critics as it isn't exactly at the cutting edge of modern cuisine but the fact that I've gone back multiple times but never once considered trying to go back to the Fat Duck says a lot to me (and I did really enjoy the Fat Duck).

OP - I'm sure you'll love it.

I'd go back to the Waterside before the Fat Duck or Royal Hospital Road.
In my opinion it beats Gavroche by a country mile, I'd say style is very similar though. Best service we have ever had.

It's not modern cutting edge stuff though. It's classical French very well done.

The waterside is superb every time I have been, it's classical french, dont' expect anything else. Bray also has the option of gimmicks and science/lab style cooking from the fat duck but for classical french food and good service it will deliver everytime. Best experienced arriving by boat with some drinks on the way, you can hire one from a few locks up or down the thames. Enjoy
and enjoy for what the Roux family stands for.

Not been to the WI but have been to the G - what makes it better?

He gives the Ledbury 7/10, so he clearly has no idea what a good restaurant is.

ETA 5/10 for the food at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon.

I think I just preferred the menu on the days in question. I didn't like the signature soufflé dish at the Gavroche and one of my desert courses was the burnt end of caramelised, it was fixed but left a sour taste (pardon the expression). Service was good at Gavroche but brilliant at the Waterside. Both venues are on the old school side of décor so nothing in them there.

I'd go back to Gavroche for the lunch deal, I'd not go tasting again.

We took my old man there for his birthday this year - I was extremely disappointed. I didn't find the food good, thought the service was poor and the interior in need of a good service. Also walked out a few hundred notes lighter than I would have it we had just gone to Prezzo or Zizzi where I actually think the food would have been of the same quality that particular night.

No. His write-ups of restaurants I know well are utter nonsense. Do you think a single top restaurateur worries what he thinks?

No, I think they only care what the Michelin inspector thinks, and therein lies the problem.
Why do you think his scoring system is crap?
