We've had threads like 'last car with cassette player', but what about one about the last diesel car on sale in the UK without a turbo?

Was a time not so long ago when most base model diesels, especially the small ones, had no turbo, but even the Volkswagen/Skoda SDIs seem to be gone from the price lists.

Cant even think of any non-turbo commercial pickup trucks either.

AFAICT there are no downsides to a turbo on a diesel apart from something else to go wrong. They can improve power, mpg and IIRC decrease emissions too. Win, win, win.

If you have to burn the devils fuel why wouldn't you have one?

I believe that you soon (if not already) won't be able to get one without a turbut because of emissions.

I disagree. I drive a 3.0 petrol at home, and at work a 1.6 diesel focus.

The focus is so much more fun to drive. Diesel Torque is much more fun than the petrol. I know the petrol comes into its own at 70+mph, but when do i ever need to go that fast?

I'd argue that the diesel is just as quick over short distances, and doesnt fk me over for 25mpg every day.

Its the main reason im looking for a 330d/335d at the moment biggrindriving

Do turbos agree with bio dieseasel and chip fat though? I was under the impression they muck up the turbos and only non-turbos like old Mercedes 300d are hardy enough to take it as fuel.

Turbo is just another gimmick to go expensively wrong IMO, like electric seats.
Who an earth is so lazy to need electric seats? They take ages to adjust and are expensive to repair if they go wrong.

Yep, they were selling SDIs cheap a few years ago new in a Golf. I looked into it but then saw they only had 74bhp (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). IIRC 0-60 was measured in dog years. Pretty sure that was in 2008.

My mate went from a nice mk4 Golf V5 4motion to a mk5 Golf SDI... He wasn't enjoying the MPG and didn't get chance to use the performance as he was just going to work and back. They're amazingly economical, but other than that... A bit slow!

Suits his needs I guess, but a shame to get rid of the V5

You do actually change gear in the petrol, right?

Nope. First-gen MINI One Ds had a 74 bhp 1.4 Toyota lump - with a turbo...

The UK gets Dacia's in some 98 days time.

Am pretty sure the base Logan in a normally aspirated diesel.

Either that, or the one I drove was very broken.

The boost pipe blew off my dad's diesel Micra when I was overtaking a van once. Does that count?

Why would they muck up the turbo? Only way I can see that happening is if it's not burning properly and you're getting unburned oil going into the exhaust turbine.

Am I correct in thinking the SDI engines, while being slow, are extremely reliable?

There are several Octavia SDIs used as taxis up my neck of the woods with well over 300k on them.

Anyway, this new, or expensive enough?! yikes
