Not exactly a hi-tech problem but wondered if there was a simple fix, google didn't help

My 5 year old has a Vtech Storio which is an electronic reading aid, they have a website where you register and download software whuch then gives you access to free stories which work on the Storio.

I have bought and connected a USB card to Storio device, plugged it into laptop using supplied USB, turn on Storio and screens says "USB connected". I have installed the Vtech software but when i try to register with the software it says it cannot find the Vtech device.

Anything i can check to eliminate everything else other faulty Storio unit?

Only clue i have is when I connect the Storio to laptop a strange error message comes up saying "this device can perform faster if you connect it to a hi-speed USB 2.0 port", and it opens windows explorer not the software.

Using dell laptop which I am sure only has USB 2.0 ports, and Vista home.
