Maybe going to waddington air show this weekend (RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire). Should be a good day so long as its sunny!

I have nothing in my bag that's even got a mediocum of reach so I was thinking of hiring something a little longer for the weekend. I have rented the 70-200mm L (f2.8) before and found it awesome, but I reckon that's probably going to fall short most of the time (and I wont need 2.8 either so the cheaper 4 will suffice).

The place I rent from also has a raft of other options... Sigma 50-500, Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 L (and the curious 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 Diffractive Optics jobbie which is very compact), Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6, 300mm f2.8 and f4 L, 400mm f5.6 L.... so good choices to pick from. From a little reading I think something that'll do at least 300mm is wise. This will be on a crop body (7D) so effective lengths will be longer.

Anyone here care to share their wisdom on what they would take to such events? I have a wide and a good walk around lens for the static displays.

I swapped my 70-200 F4 IS for a 100-400 for airshows, I used a hired one a couple of years ago and it was an ideal range.

This year shooting on full frame so will lose a little of the long end but it should be OK. I'll take a 1 series and a 1.4 converter just in case I need some more.

This. The 100-400L is almost built for airshows, theres nothing close.

Been to Waddo many a times and probably will be this year, I have managed some pretty good pics with just a 200, obviously the 400 if you can it is possible with smaller. Also you can pay extra to go into a photographers area which I have not done yet but could be worth it.

Have a word with Russ at The Flash Centre in Leeds (tell him I recommended you), they have hire gear and I know they've got some 100-400s.

I use a 100-400 on a 7d, works well, key learning point for me is to remove any UV / Skylight filters when trying to shot at the long end (370-400mm), otherwise pictures can be a little fuzzy. Just keep the hood on and protect the front element.

100-400L hates filters with a passion.

Beware, I have heard that they may not allow you to pay on the day as advanced ticket sales would suggest a full house.

I should add that's for both days

I'd rather go for the 70-200 2.8 and a x2 converter.

got tickets! Right whats the 28-300mm F3.5-5.6 L like? thats another option I have though currently just asking round friends to see if I can borrow something on the cheap.... some of the rental prices are a bit hard to stomach for just a days use. Could easily be putting that £££ towards my fund for buying my own kit!
