I'm seriously close to caving in selling my sensible Fiesta and buying an MR2 mk2. I've loved these cars since I first laid my eyes on them as a young lad. However, the girlfriend raises the very sensible point that I might need to carry passengers at some points in my life, such as her fragile 90 year old nan. However, I simply can't afford to run two vehicles, and I will be buying an MR2 with the funds from selling my car.

Before I say 'sod it' and buy my fantasy car, is there anything like the mr2 of the 90's but with four seats? I'm talking mid-engined sporty fun, of similar era and around £1,500 - £2,000.

Don't want to leave nanny out in the cold when she might need a lift somewhere, because I only have two seats, but if i have to I will. You're only young once...

I doubt you will get mid engine and 4 seats for £2K.

The only car i can think of with the 1st 2 requirements is a Ferrari Mondial.

Ready to be proved wrongsmile

Actually, I've no idea how much they sell for. Granted, it is rear engined, not mid, but ho hum.

GT4 from the same era. Same engine, more weight, more driven wheels.

Matra Murena had 3 seats and midengined?
Renault Alpine GTA had 4 seats but is £5000 and rear-engined.
Panther Solo 2 had 4 seats and mid-engined but £15000+
Ferarri Mondial had 4 seats and mid-engined but £8000+

She doesnt have to go in the back laugh

I thought it was just me being a bit of a nimby and missing something obvious, but the world is lacking in budget MR fun!

Funnily enough, i found a rotting Elan in a shed last year, but bottled when it came to confronting the owners. Probably still there.

You seriously think there's a mid engined sports car out there, hell even just a sports car that'll get you dorris' frail 90 year old granny in the back?

Buy whatever you want & keep a tenner back each month to pay for a taxi for her.

Unless she's rich of course, & very frail........scratchchin

Might have a look at these, but I was really wanting to get something RWD.

She does ok for money and can afford taxis, I just dont want her/my girlfriend to feel neglected.

Buy the MR2, get the girlfriend to buy a standard 4 seater and borrow it when taking your nan out!

I know this doesn't strictly comply to the price requirements, but when you mentioned a four seat MR2 my first thought was a Ferrari Mondial (or a 308 GT4)... :-)

Well ill say...RX8!

Can be in budget.
RWD.
Front mid-engined (ok, not true mid engined, but technically correct!)
Seats four.

Ok, practically, even if the MPG dosen't worry you, the low compression issues might. And at that budget you would have to be careful and clued up on what to look for (although it can be a problem at any age or mileage).

And for the record, I ran one for a year and loved it.

Although I have had 5 MR2's now. Fantastic cars.

Surprisingly cheap on insurance as well, at least for me. Turbo ones were half the price of Impreza's etc. If you could get it, have you considered a MR2 on classic insurance and a dirt-cheap runabout for daily use?
