Ford Fiesta 2003 engine warning light, codes from trip meter
Discussion
Hi,
Our fiesta has just given us our first problem since new so are pleased to have gone this far, has just reached 102000 miles.
Yesterday whilst driving at normal speeds 30-40mph the car suddenly developed a misfire at low revs but got us home safely and the engine warning light came on, the car starts okay this morning but the light is still on.
Have heard that holding down the trip meter and turning key to first position it will give me the fault code rather than paying main dealer premium money to do the same test, the codes as you scroll through are,
test
Gage or 6a6e
bulb
A 0000
nr0850
EE fail 85. (This is flashing)
CF1 80
CF2 00
CF3 00
none
E 0000
Any help/advise gratefully recieved,
Martyn....

Unfortunately the cluster will only give you cluster related fault codes, so that's not going to help you with engine related faults I'm afraid.
You will need to get hooked up to a code reader through the OBD port, though any generic reader should do (i.e. you don't have to do it at a dealer).
If it's mis-firing and the cluster is lit up like a Christmas tree then chances are the code will tell you that you have a mis-fire and on which cylinder (though if there's more than one it may not catch both). If you've got two cylinders down then it's almost certainly coil pack. If it's only one then it could still actually be two in which case coil pack or HT leads, most likely (assuming plugs are ok). If you can get a coil pack and leads on the proviso that you can give them back if the problem doesn't goes away then you could try that first. It's a 10 minutes car park job to change them.

Hi,
We are pleased that the engine is now running super smooth now, 2 things done were,
Terraclean, see http://terraclean.co.uk/ i first saw this on wheeler dealers. Once done the engine pulled very smooth from 3000rpm upwards but still a low rev judder starting when pulling off so i did some digging on the www and found a common problem with 2003 fiestas is that water leaks in through a leaky windscreen washer jet and somehow gets to the sparkplugs. I took off the air filter box and on pulling out the plugs and looking down the holes i could see water, definately not oil and the plugs were water stained. I cleaned the plugs which were wet, sprayed some WD40 in the spark plug holes and put some windscreen sealent around the windscreen washer jets on the inside and immediately the judder had gone. It took 3 days for the diagnostic light to go out and really pleased with the result.
Apparantly the leaky jets were a ford recall but we never were contacted,
Good luck,
Martyn.
