These things are getting dirt cheap, 2005 models for less than 3k with a FSH and full loaded, or a sligtly older and less well speced can be had for £1500 on the bay
both the 2.6 (log book) and 1.3 can be had for that sort of money.

just how likely is it that it will blow up, they cant be that bad surely?

could it be the new MX5

No such thing as a 2.6

I was tempted a few years ago, glad I didn't as it's taken a nose dive in terms of value. Get one when they're around 1-2k to minimise your loss...high chance of it blowing up.

FSH won't make much difference.

I'll get flamed for that comment but I'll stand by it. Safer to buy a 10 year old Twin Spark Alfa...and that's saying something!

on a serious note buy as cheap as you can. Squirrel away £1200 for a rebuild. Your engine does not go bang..... you have £1200 in your pocket. It goes bang, you get a rebuilt engine with a warranty. win win

They both have the same size engine,

Get the 230bhp one, especialy since there isn't much difference price wise.

All of Mazda's RX-units have come with wankel rotary engines.
based on Mazda's ratings, a 1.3L rotary engine. But insurance may consider it a 2.6L.

The displacement ratings of a rotary is a bit of a misnomer as you cannot rate them the same as a piston engine. The actual "full" displacement of a 13B is 3.9L, but that is from 1 full rotation of the 2 rotors. **But** 1 full rotation of the rotors turns the crankshaft (or properly called an "eccentric" shaft on a rotary) *3* times.

Since a piston engine rates it's displacement based on 1 rotation of the crank, Mazda follows suit and rates the rotary by 1 crank revolution... so 1/3 of 3.9L is 1.3L.

From a power output perspective it's really a 2.6L as you get twice as many "power-strokes" from a rotary then from a piston engine. This is why rotary engines are so powerful compared to its size.

so for 2k is it worth buying a low mileage one then selling it for spares if it blows up, what sort of mileage do they usually go pop?

It is a 1.3. Im confused on how the 1.3 in the rx7 is 3.9 and the 1.3in the Rx8 is 2.6

What is there to explain? Do you always believe what some muppet has put in their ebay listing?

1.3, 2.6, 3.9 Call it what you want they are all the same engine.

Can go pop at pretty much anything over 30k miles, spares cars are £600 a go as there are so many dead ones.

The majority of people on here will tell you not to buy one.

At about £2k it is a bargain. What millage they might munch an engine depends completely on how well its been maintained (and some luck) but if its over 75k it is risky.

Have you driven one?

Thank you for your input though.

No wonder the "Old Heads" keep clear of some threads!
