Morning,

After long planning to get an iPhone 5 I changed my mind at the last minute & yesterday impulse ordered a Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

I've had iOS since the original iPhone & the thought of switching to Android is daunting. To give myself the best chance of getting on with Android any tips on how to get it set up?

How to transfer contacts? What to use to replace iTunes? Is there a back up option like iTunes? What should I know?

Key must have Apps?

I made the move from IOS to Android a few years ago and havn't looked back.
To make things easy, you can sync up your contacts from the iPhone to google. Android integrates will with Google (no surpirise!) so you will be able to access all the contacts. There are a number of ways of doing this, either by using apps or not. Here is just one of them.
As for useful apps, One of the most useful that I use is call confirm. This saves me accidentlaly dialling someone.

As for what to use to replace iTunes, I persoanlly don't use my phone mjuch for music, however winamp is great. There are ways on Android (using apps) that you can still use iTunes to manage your music.

As for settign it up, run through the quick setup, then go to the play store and search for some apps. It will then take you a short while to get your home screens set up how you want with widgets. Mine is set up with a clock on the main screen with the most used apps also located on this screen. The scrrens either side get the less important but just as used apps and so on. I am quite happy to use th eapp drawer as I do not like my screens taken up with apps. I prefer to use widgets.

Funnily enough, i'm planning the exact same thing. I'm pretty open to both eco systems but right now i'm a fully paid up Apple guy - Macbook Pro, iPhone 4S and an iPad. My work place are potentially offering me a Galaxy S3 as a new work phone, so i'm weighing up the options. I've already used a few android phones in the past on a regular basis, such as the HTC Desire and the Galaxy S2 and have built up a few apps that I already own in the play store.

I've been thinking about what I do mostly on the phone and how I can port this across to an S3 for regular use.

Cars - I use the iPhone to connect to the car for music, both my iTunes library and spotify.
S3 - switch to the android spotify, leave an ipod in the car.

Navigation - No loss there with the lack of decent maps in IOS at the moment. I have the IOS Tomtom App for nav use for work / business, etc.
S3 - Tomtom have just released the equivalent app for Android, and it's only £31.

Text / Messaging - i use iMessage the moment since all my friends have IOS devices or use whatsapp.
S3 - Whatsapp cross platform functionality covers me for this + traditional SMS.

Facebook, twitter all have their own equivalent apps for android.

Browsers are of course fine.

Work Exchange email - normally use the IOS client for this.
S3 - My workplace has an exchange policy which forces you to password protect the phone with a silly long alphanumeric password on Android - very frustrating to use the phone in practice. I bought a copy of Touchdown by Nitrodesk which is a great exchange client and keeps the exchange policy lock local to the app only.

In short, think about what you do with the phone the most and have a browse of the play store to see what equivalent apps are available.

I had a 3G and come the end of my contract I changed it to a Desire HD, primarily as I didn't want to stump up £100 odd and a few more quid a month for a 4/4S

I have 5 months left on the HTC contract and I can't wait to go back to an iPhone.

I just can't get on with Android, it doesn't flow, isn't intuitive and is just too complicated plus texting, the bloody Qwerty keyboard is a nightmare, I always have to go back to correct texts, emails or notes and because of where the full stop is, to the right of the space key, I can't send.a.text.without.putting.full.stops.in.instead.of.spaces.drives.me.mad. Never had issues with the iPhone keyboard layout.

Tried Swype and it was worse.

I managed to get all my sms, photos from ios to android - not painful at all!

Also, iTunes integration: have a look at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com....

Dont regret moving to my S3 at all!

Agree with the Android keyboard btw even having tried many of the others that are available. Currently using Flex9 which you can type, swype, actually draw the letters and the best bit, which is dictate powered by dragon.

I have a Mac and an iPod as well so the music is all integrated using Doubletwist which even looks like iTunes biggrin

What I found interesting with the S3 is in the reviews there is a lot of talk about its build quality, I was in the pub last night and friend has just got one, I had a play with it and yes the back is a bit plasticy and feels a bit flimsy when removed however I didn't instantly think, "oh the build is crap", it felt nice n the hand and whilst perhaps a bit on the light side I thought it was a well made and designed phone.

The One X though is a nicer design and build, considering it has very favourable reviews and in some cases is marked higher than the S3 I can't work out why it hasn't done as well as it perhaps should.

Put simply, the One X has a pathetic battery life, and the sense interface is claggy.

I've not got it yet - supposed to arrive on Monday but still not arrived! Good old O2!

I've just been reading the Galaxy S3 thread, some useful things in there.

For my current uses are the below the best bet?

iPod/ Music player - PowerAmp?

Video/ films - Winamp?

iTunes - Double Twist

Podcasts - what's best for this? The iPhone/ iTunes interface is brilliant for podcasts.

Email - Gmail app?

Is there a good app for file management? I like that the iPhone organises things for me - no files to arrange, music in music, videos in videos etc, no need to organise different folders.
