The DCi engine from Renault / Nissan
Discussion
Hi chaps
Looking at a run of the mill replacement for the wife's daily and the Qasquai has popped into the search. I'm finding it pretty tough finding decent petrol examples and most seem to be diesel. Now, the wife does a fair bit of town work, commuting 12 miles each way plus the occasional motorway blast to visit family.
Anyone got any experience of the engine, in either 1.5 or 2.0 flavour, particularly in the Qasquai? Is it generally reliable? Chain or belt and if belt, what are the intervals. Also, can the SPF be easily removed if required, I've had a poor experience with an early Mazda PDF with an encrypted ecu that couldn't be removed....
All opinions welcome and merry christmas one and all

DPF PROBLEMS ARE RIFE WITH THE DCI RENAULT/NISSAN engine, was on watchdog. Easily removed if required.
Your Mazda DPF could have been easily removed, the ECU's are not encrypted, this is the line spouted by the non-professionals that don't have the correct tools and/or knowledge.
(I work as a software tech for an aftermarket ECU software company)

i've the "M9R" unit in a 2006 laguna. it is a 2.0dCi in 150bhp guise and i beleive the same as what would be in the nissan you refer to.
i have taken this car up to 226,973 miles and couting.
in this time i've had a new egr valve and new clutch. the turbo is whistling slightly and there is a minor "blow" on the manifold.
still drives fine and pulls well.
the camchain is fine and shows no sign of issue during regular inspection.
oh, and it remaps to around 190bhp...

The 1.5dCi is the K9K engine and different to the 2.0 litre!
Cool, so which in generally considered the more reliable? the wife doesn't care about power so I'm concerned about buying the right one.To the ecu expert who mentioned bypass, how much typically am I looking at to bypass?

1.9 maybe however the 1.5's are no issue whatsoever, I don't think the E4's have them however the E5's if they do, will be self generating. Just spoke to the Service Manager and he has said he has never seen a DPF issue on a 1.5, however the 1.9's are a different issue, they are an older engine and you wont find one in a Nissan.
I have a 2005 1.5dci Scenic. I can get up to 70mpg driving very gently but it is very boring.
The 1.9 units seem to have a problem with turbo seals going leading to engine oil being burnt and running the sump dry. The 1.5's seem to have a problem with con rods snapping. I spoke to a friend who's a very good Renault mechanic who blamed this on poor servicing. Do a search for used engine prices, the worse an engine the higher the demand and price for used ones. I have seen lots of Renaults with rods sticking out the back of the block and never on any other manufacturer. I bought mine because I wanted great mpg, it had been serviced twice as often as it should and had low miles.
Service is everything, apparently.
Older Euro3 1.5's don't have dpf's, 106bhp 6 speed Euro 4's do.

Typically £400 for a professional job by a specialist.or £250 for a chisel down the exhaust and installation of a cheap generic DPF software removal map into the cars ECU (this will just stop the lights showing on the dash, rarely removes the regeneration process or reconfigures the fuelling or boost)
I had the 65 bhp 1.5 in a Clio, was on high miles when I sold it and still pulling well, no smoke, no rattles, and that one hadn't seen a service for years until I got hold of it. Not heard of any real issues with the higher power versions either, good solid engines. Injector failures can happen to the same extent on any diesel really.
1.5 Is a better engine than the 1.9 but both i would avoid like the plague especially a used one if servicing hasn't been carried out then expect problems. If getting new then keep on top of the servicing and do a oil change atleast every 8-10 miles but with such short mileage i would get a petrol short journeys kill modern diesels.
I ran a year 2008 1.5 dci qashqai fitted with the K9K engine from new up to 4 years old and 100k miles. I found the whole package to be very good.
The engine in mine did not have a DPF so no worries on that front. The engine is not the most powerful thing but its more than adequate for an all rounder type of car. I did city driving, motorway work and even towed my trailer and kit car around to trackdays. The 6 speed box helps you keep the engine on the boil but the revs do have to be worked to pull well planned overtakes!
I have no real problems in that time. Rear dampers were recalled due to worn bushes.
I had a couple of poor services from Nissan where I was sent on my way for another 12k miles with a filty dirt encrusted air filter (which i removed and placed on the service desk the next day in front of 4 other customers booking their cars in )
I liked the car and am considering a +2 qashqai for my next works car.
