Looking for 1st TVR

Hi John
See if you can get Rob to inspect the car, or take someone with some knowledge with you.
A multimeter will only tell you the voltage stored in the battery and what alternator is charging at.
I pressume this is at a dealers and they may have a ramp to put it on to inspect outriggers etc.
You can check the seals around the roof and tops of windows for splits and general condition, and see if there are holes or gaps when roof on and windows up ( dont fold the roof down if it freezing cold as it may damage the rear screen).
But please dont get sucked in, if it is not 100% the car for, you then go and find the one that is.

If buying from a recognised dealer, then you will get a warranty. Then get the car checked out thoroughly by a different expert in February. Back to the selling dealer if the expert finds anything material. Better than trying to spot problems yourself. I was shown a Griff (same chassis) in at my expert's for outrigger replacement. I stared at the chassis for five minutes with it up on the ramp and would have sworn it was perfect. I was wrong. The first place to go is invisible without getting the body off, and is on top of the corners of the outriggers. So you don't stand a chance of spotting the problem unless it is a total rust bucket.
If buying privately, make sure the price is substantially cheaper to give you budget to spare if you hit problems, and try to buy from someone who can show you history, signs of having cared, good reason for selling etc. If it was me, on my first visit I would get a note of the reg and the place he has it serviced, then "go for a coffee to ponder" and pop over to see them and ask them face to face about the car. If happy, go back and deal.
Good luck, and don't just decide based on how shiny it is.......there is a polishing brigade out there, but unless they have looked after the mechanicals too, then you could well be buying a lot of expense

+1. Have yourself a contingency and expect to spend some money. It sounds painful, but all is forgiven when you get behind the wheel and hear that wonderful V8...If buying privately, make sure the price is substantially cheaper to give you budget to spare if you hit problems, and try to buy from someone who can show you history, signs of having cared, good reason for selling etc. If it was me, on my first visit I would get a note of the reg and the place he has it serviced, then "go for a coffee to ponder" and pop over to see them and ask them face to face about the car. Gents,
Thank you all for your advice. I listened to it all... and then went and bought the first one I saw! I was confident enough - thanks to Mr Rob Ingleby's expertise.
Should take delivery in next couple of weeks.
Chim 4.0l - T400LTR - Halcyon Atlantis Blue (/green!)
Anyone know this one? I think one of the previous owners moved to Aus/NZ...
Am (really) looking forward to getting out in it! Bring on the summer!

Sounds like a nice car Jon, glad you've got fixed up - You'll need to put up a couple of photos..Thank you all for your advice. I listened to it all... and then went and bought the first one I saw! I was confident enough - thanks to Mr Rob Ingleby's expertise.

I doubt one of the best, but all seems in good order.
A bit of flaking on the chassis which will need regular 'maintenance' (not the outriggers... they are recently brand new).
Hopefully pick up the car next week.
Am looking for insurance quotes... £2k from Admiral (they insurance my other car).
Best so far is Classic Line at sub £1k. Even Mr Flux was coming in at c.£2k!

Sorry forgot to add.. U will love it! I have had my first one for 6 months and still grin like a 4 yr old when it fires up, I am in danger of polishing the paint off it, and take the roof off at all times ( unless it's raining), the heater is good, the transmission tunnel keeps your legs warm and just buy a hat for the top of your head!

Hi I know you probably have already been told about this company but we use Manning and our insurance is less than £300 and that is for the two of us and includes track days. Worth a phone call?
Congratulations too. You will love her.
Shelly
Jon, you want a limited mileage Classic policy from someone like Mannings, and even their standard unlimited mileage policy, including track days, for me is £460, but that is mirroring the 5 years plus of no claims I have on my other car, and I am over 50, and I don't live in a tower block in Westminster with the car parked on the street in Whitechapel.........give me a call if you want a chat 07736 774325Congratulations too. You will love her.

Just had to change my insurance. Ran out of miles on my Mannings policy today, as I had to do a 175 mile trip to get the alarm changed.
I rang around and, bearing in mind I want track day cover too, after a bit of negotiation I got a cracking deal from Classic Line, who are a broker. 01455 639000
£423 premium, unlimited mileage, £250 excess, £75 glass excess, £1000 track day excess, free breakdown cover, free legal cover, ALL UK track days covered (Mannings only covered ATDO track days). I only have to email them with the details each time I book a track day. What I don't get is 60 days a year foreign cover, which I did get with Mannings, but I have no intention of going into the foreign with my TVR (other than Wayels).
I do live in a fairly low risk country area, its not my only car, the car is in a locked compound, I am 59, have had no points on my licence since 1986 and my only accident in the last five years was avoiding a head on with a woman texter in a Peugeot sardine can.

Just as a matter of interest would Manning not extend your cover for an additional cost?I rang around and, bearing in mind I want track day cover too, after a bit of negotiation I got a cracking deal from Classic Line, who are a broker. 01455 639000

Yes, they wanted about £440 for 7.5k miles or £465 unlimited, and I would have gone with it. However I had a spare hour to check the quote, using the PH insurance wiki, and the deciding factor was not actually the price, but Classic Line giving me cover for ALL track days in the UK.
Mannings only cover ATDO track days. Three of my next four are not ATDO organised, so would not be covered by Mannings. I have tried before to get them to budge on the track day type, and they won't, so i was uninsured at 140mph last August, and also when I spun the car at over 90 on the same event.....luckily the tt in the 3 series tried to hit someone else, not me, before he got banned from the session
