C63 AMG Edition 507 announced

Merc slots the Black Series engine into a 'more standard' C63

There’s to be a new addition to the Mercedes C63 AMG range, and it’s this: the Edition 507. No, it’s not named after the classic BMW roadster; rather, it takes its name from its power output – a not-insignificant 507hp.

That figure comes courtesy of the engine that powers the 510hp Black Series - albeit detuned by a whisker here - but the Edition 507 looks to be a rather different kettle of fish. Where the Black is a hardcore proposition aimed towards track use, the Edition 507 has been geared more for the road.

While it takes the Black Series’ bonnet, the rest of the cosmetics are broadly the same as the standard C63’s, with the exception of the new 19” alloy wheels and a smattering of gloss black about the place. Same goes for the suspension setup and the seven-speed MCT transmission, neither of which will change in any significant way.

However, under the bonnet, things are rather different. Like the Black Series, the Edition 507 will feature a fettled version of the M156 6.2-litre V8 engine that uses parts from the SLS AMG – namely its forged pistons, con rods and lightweight crankshaft. That'll give it a maximum power figure 50hp higher than the standard car’s, and 20hp more even than the AMG Performance Package. Allied to maximum torque of 450lb ft, that means 62mph comes up in 4.2sec for the saloon and coupe, and 4.3sec for the estate, with an electronically-limited 174mph top whack for all three.

Of course, as any petrolhead worth his salt knows, it’s always wise to combine an increase in power with better brakes, so the Edition 507 gets composite discs like the Black Series', chosen for their lightness and resistance to warping, though here they're only 360mm in diameter.

All three C's will be available as a 507

Inside, the 507 will also get an Alcantara steering wheel with a stitched 12 o’clock marking, a selection of new leather options and some red dial needles, as well as some strategically-placed Edition 507 badges.

While Mercedes describes the new model as ‘exclusive’, there’s no mention yet of any sort of limited production, though we’re awaiting confirmation on that. Pricing and on-sale dates, too, are yet to be released – of course, we’ll bring you more as we get it.

Great looking car - shame that the rear carbon spoiler looks like a DIY after-market job.

Hmmm. DMS will do you a remap on the "basic" C63 AMG and liberate 550bhp from it. I doubt this will be worth the extra outlay. (IIRC the normal lump in the C63 is the same as in the E63 but detuned some, so you can relatively easily tune it back upwards.)

Very much like this! And as above, if (in the unlikely event) I was in the market to buy such a car new, this would be somehow more appealing than the Black-Series..

I was under the impression the 6.2L V8 had been 'retired' in favour of the 5.5L turbocharged engine?

Why haven't they changed the cheapo gear selector yet??? Even the A-class has the new one!

It has, but the new one won't fit in the C-class iirc, so for now the 6.2 is here to stay.

Surely they didn't actually bother to retune the engine? You can picture the meeting: someone sticks up their hand and suggests that the standard C63 can't handle the power and they should detune it by 0.6%

Could be to do with exhausts/intakes, or maybes they just didnt want to have the same headline power figure!

Looks to be very similar to the C63 DR 520 from a few years back.

This isn't meant to come accross as a troll comment, but I refuse to look at any mercs (new or used) whilst they persist with the foot brake.

Either have a button on the centre console for both on and off or go back to a lever (very doubtful).

It's a shame becuase I love the noise they make and would love to own a C63. frown

Out of interest, what is it you specifically dislike about them? I thought i'd hate mine, but actually it's fine IMO.

I can understand your objection with a manual transmission (it's a pain) but for an auto you really don't notice it and it's easy to get used to.

You really wouldn't skip a C63 for that if you had the choice....

Ditto my intention is not to troll, but I am intrigued to know why you think the upsides of the C63 (or alternative cars) are all wholly outweighed by the downside of the footbrake?

I have no problems with your position just wondering...
