American Style Fridge Freezer - opinions?
Discussion
I have a pretty big kitchen so i can easily fit one in and it would look right at home, however the previous owners had a fancy SMEG thing so I would have to move a unit to make a bit more space but it's only a minor alteration.
So is it worth getting an American Style Fridge Freezer? i have heard good and bad things about them - i like the look for sure and you get the ice and water dispenser which i like, however i have also heard you have to bend down all the time for things like salad and stuff in the bottom of the door, also they only come in A+ energy rating at best.
What are people's opinions on them, both practical and otherwise?

I have a Samsung one!
The wifes only complaint was the ice/ water dispenser takes up to much room in the freezer compartment. Its a chick thing I know!
The water filters are very expensive if you buy straight from Currys/ Comet etc so just google the part number on the side and you will get the price down from £60 to £12.
Ours is great and the water/ ice thing is handy!

We got a samsung one with just the filtered cool water dispenser, as the ice maker version took up too much room in the freezer compartment. I'm sure you still have the recipie for ice, so just make it in the normal way - you could even store a pot of ice cubes in the extra space.
I dont have to fight for beer cooling space anymore either.

We have a proper American one - a Maytag. Maybe they'be changed, but the American 'style' ones we looked at (12 years ago) were pretty crap in comparision. Ours is built like a tank.So is it worth getting an American Style Fridge Freezer? i have heard good and bad things about them - i like the look for sure and you get the ice and water dispenser which i like, however i have also heard you have to bend down all the time for things like salad and stuff in the bottom of the door, also they only come in A+ energy rating at best.

Is it worth it? Strictly, no - it's more of a lifestyle product than any thing else.
It works well though, the fridge obviously has a lot of space, although the freezer isn't all that big, and the ice maker takes up a bit of space.
If you look seriously at one, check the dimensions carefully especially regarding how the doors open - ours has to sit forwards of the line of units it's in and it needs to doors to almost fold back 180 degrees against the ajoining surfaces to remove the lower drawers - it wouldn't work in a corner, more example. And make sure you can get it into the house.
I have this one and love it. Not sure if you can get it in the UK though

And here it is in my kitchen (which we have since finished)

There are two depths to the refrigerators. One is counter depth and the other is standard. Mine is standard and as you may see from the kitchen photo protrudes from the cabinets. That is how it is meant to look and has stainless steel on the sides as well. Counter depth refrigerators do not protrude and as a result have less space inside. This just something to bare in mind when selecting.

New LG models have the ice maker attached to the inside of the freezer door, so there's more room IN the freezer.
Also, they now have the flap on the fridge door that flips down on the outside so you can get to wine/juice/milk without opening the entire door, like Samsung have.
Oh, and they're A+ rated, too.

we've got a big stainless GE one,
cost a bit more than the run of the mill stuff, but it's now about 8 years old, still looks like new, and the only things we've had to replace are the internal bulbs.
the ice/water dispenser is very handy but does rob a fair bit of space from the freezer, which is too small for our needs and has meant we've had to get a separate chest freezer.
I would def recommend one and personally would buy another if the need arose.

I don't think that's true in every case.
he is spot on! Although some of the real american ones may not be all that american either..... as a general rule, leave the door open for a minute, if it makes a sound like close encounters of the thrid kind, its crap.

Not just a chick thing - I agreed when we first got ours (Amana - it doesn't have either water or ice) but after a few years I'd like an ice dispenser as it a total pain to have a bag of cubes in the freezer. Ours is always full and never has space for the trays (or even a bag if desperate).....Ours is great and the water/ ice thing is handy!
OP a proper American fridge is a thing of beauty, big and solid the only things we've had to fix is bulbs and they're the same as Samsung so easy to get hold of.
I'm only a single man so haven't got a big family to feed - it's mostly for looks if anything and the instant ice which i'd use a lot of - that peykell one looks maybe a little too big!
I suppose i will need to measure the depth too.
You can see where the space is now for the old fridge at the back wall. If i move the double cupboard unit under the black worktop, i can create around 93mm which i think is enough.

rest of kitchen: so shouldn't be out of place in there.

I've got a Samsung one also and love it. No problems and plenty of space in both freezer and fridge compared to a normal style fridge.
