I've always been a bit of a surf fan, but I've just come back from a week in Newquay and am totally hooked now, so want to do it more often!

I know Boscombe is the stock answer, but I've heard the false reef is ste and is still closed at the moment. I also know that I'm not going to get anywhere near as good waves as I do in Newquay, but I'm just looking for a bit of a play around so anything over a couple of feet will work!

Oh, and by 'near', I'm quite happy to do a couple of hours each way.

Any ideas?

I've kayak surfed at Whittering. It was quite good if memory serves.

Don't take this the wrong way but as someone who has lived and surfed on the North Devon/Cornwall coast, I would suggest that you dont bother trying to surf anywhere along the south coast up here but instead make less frequent but better trips to North Devon/Cornwall, South Devon/Cornwall or West Wales. The surf up here really is non existent and its amusing to think that people are willing to try and surf the skanky bournemouth pier for just 1 maybe 2 foot every once in a while!

Good Luck

Jonny boy,

I have to admit - you wont surf up here. Ive long since sold my surfboards but now kite surf at hill head. So i have a 5'8 Directional which is just perfect! Come play and have a go on my kit. youl be hooked.

its also perfect for when you do get down cornwall (where I spent most weekends til the little one arrived), directional kite surfing in big swell in some hidden spots is just bliss.

Cheers all! I know I'm never going to get Cornwall-esque waves up here, but I'm just after something to keep my interest between trips to the proper waves!

Hello mate! I was going to go for kite Surfing lessons whilst I was down there last week but never got the chance. Give me a shout next time you're heading out and I'll tag along (if you don't mind!). It looks amazing fun! I'll PM you with my number and stuff.

I've given up with surfing down this way.
My board is well and truly in the loft.
I've got a kite surfing lesson booked at Hill Head as I only live a few mins away. I really hope I get hooked on it...

Compton Bay, IoW. Should be able to do it in your 2 hours, Lymington, 1/2 hour Ferry and 20 mins drive. Very under-rated, and relatively unknown.

Peaky Beachbreaks, better mid to high tide. 2/10 ft SW swells if the wind has N or E in it.

Not so good this time of year, but a good Spring / Autumn alternative for a day trip.
