I own a very lovely e92 m3, however, I find myself looking longingly at others e46 m3's. I don't know if I think it's just a better looking car but I'm strangely tempted to go back an era!
I never owned the e46 variant, any one else gone back a model? Or indeed not wanted to leave e46 for e92?

I haven't been fortunate enough to own a e92 m3 however throughout my e46 CS ownership I wasn't really ever tempted.
From what others have said the e92 is faster but also quite a bit softer than the e46. I also personally much prefer the s54 over the v8, in fact I prefer general a straight 6 over a v8 so I'm probably a bit biased. The last thing I'd have wanted from my CS is more weight and for it to be softer. I really loved the edge to the handling and the engine.
Rightly or wrongly I've always thought of the e92 m3 as more of a very fast GT car. That's not what I wanted at all, if I could have afforded an extra 10k I would have changed to a CSL not gone the other way
Any excuse to post a pic up....

I really do think the E46 is one of those untrumpable cars, even if the next generation is bigger / faster / better at everything.
The E9x M3 is fantastic, but I've always thought of it as more of an E39 M5 spiritual successor, rather than an E46M3 successor.
Big snarling V8, Jeckyll & Hyde personality, jack of all trades, not quite as chuckable but still a good handler.
Which I suppose means the sportier 1 series' are more of a successor to the E46. Having driven a 1M and a 135, I'd go along with that too actually.

I think the V8 M3 is a nice looking car, but I would only change it for a CSL maybe because its more likely to hold its value lol Other than that I would go V10 M6.
CSLs are bought for a multitude of reasons outside of their ability to hold value. I could not think of one scenario where I would be stuck deciding between one and an M6, incomparable cars in form and function reallye92 out of the box is a very accomplished road car, and the engine is masterpiece.
With a bit of work and some money, it becomes an incredible track car - capable of flying at both Pflanzgarten 1 (downhill) and at Quiddlebach Hohe/flugplatz - which is uphill

The 3 Schirmer M3 GTs were running at Destination Nürburgring this week, and were lapping quicker than the time Porsche have claimed for the 991 GT3....

That's certainly being used properly! I'm tracking mine a little more in August, hopefully finding its limits will make me appreciate it more. With a bit of work and some money, it becomes an incredible track car - capable of flying at both Pflanzgarten 1 (downhill) and at Quiddlebach Hohe/flugplatz - which is uphill

I have a M3 CS and while when I was looking for one I could have gone and got myself a really nice early E92 M3 if I wanted I have always hankered after E46 M3 for a long time. Has stunning looks, stunning engine, great driver focused interior, top performer of its class, great road tests etc.
Whilst I have had a short test drive in a new E92 M3 at a BMW Dealer for comparison I would say wasn't long enough to get under the skin of the vehicle and really appreciate. I would say drive them both, I would imagine E92 more comfortable as a daily especially with EDC but worse fuel, but E46 is a cracking motor either way especially when u found a nice one. CS is a really great all rounder. CSL I really want one :-)

Lots of talk about engines, not so much talk about size and weight! Dynamically I would have thought an E46 is a better car surely being more than 100kg lighter ? I think CS manual's will become very sort after cars.
without wishing to cause offence, people have been saying that about CSes since they came out. All the magazines spouting "this is the best M3" "lacks the compromises of the CSL".It also lacks the epic induction noise, the sharpness, and specialness of the CSL.
Prices of those on sale indicates the CS isn't really worth anymore than a normal M3.
