My father has had his "fsmail.net" email account for years. Yesterday, he tried to log on as usual after a few weeks not checking it (he's almost 87 years old and so doesn't check it too often) and was unable to do so.

He assumed that his password was at fault somehow and so tried to change it. However, when he went through the various stages, it emerged that fsmail does not recognise his actual email address at all. A message appears that it is was not a valid address.

Though, when I tried to open a new account for him using the old account address, I was told that that address is already in use.

I've tried to log on myself on several different machines. To no avail. fsmail.net, which turned into Orange and is now EE, are unable to help. When I call the helpline, they pass me from pillar to post. There seems to be no email address or telephone number for fsmail itself and so no one wants to take responsibility. They are worse than useless.

It seems that my dad will have to open a new account with someone else. Obviously, that's not too much of a problem. My question is, can an email system "forget" one of its addresses? I've never heard of anything like this.

Anyone got any ideas or leads?

Thanks.

email it and see what you get back from the mail server. It'll tell you if the mailbox is still reachable or not. If you get a non-delivery response back then it'll have been deleted but it's unlikely unless it hasn't been used for a long time.

"Invalid address."

"Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 5.1.1 Adresse d au moins un destinataire invalide.
Invalid recipient. OUK_416 [416]"

It's only been a few weeks since he used it. I've got email addresses I've not used for months that are still active.

Is he still a customer of Orange? or was it a free one?

AFAIR his was a free one. He doesn't have a mobile.

The Orange.net Terms & Conditions (PDF document) state:

Orange said:
10.2 You further agree that Orange may immediately terminate your use of the Service if you fail to use the Service at least once during any 90 day period.

10.3 You may terminate this Agreement and your use of the Service at any time by refraining from using the Service for a 90day
period.
It's not clear if this applies to fsmail as well, but it could be likely.

Thanks for that. I think that this is the problem. on Orange's website, orange mail and fsmail are under the same heading. So, I assume that fsmail comes under the same terms and conditions.

Though, I'm surprised that he didn't access it for three months.

You can you onto the orange site and agree to the terms and conditions (ie that you will use their internet) and the email address is re activated.

(Even if you don't use their services)

I can't see where that is on their site. It is such a mishmash now that it is linked to the new EE 4G service.
