I'm buying a Touran after Christmas for my missus.
She currently has a 2004 Audi A4 Avant 1.9TDI 130bhp which has been a really good car,
I've been mainly looking at the 2.0TDI sport Touran, however I've found a high spec 1.4TSI 140bhp DSG Touran locally and it has made me think!!

Has anybody any experience of both and any advice?
The car is used for all family transportation, the car does approximately 250 miles per week,
I've alway's had petrol car's in the past, but the A4 has been great with it's high mpg TDI engine

Help me please!!

If it's mostly for town use I'd go petrol. 1.4T is a good little unit too.

A Golf, Leon or A3 would be a much better car. Lower on the road, better handling, same interior space, same spec, same engines, slightly cheaper, same maintenance, pretty much same everything.

Fashion 4x4s aren't that great really. I've driven the Touran a few times and have been left unimpressed every time.

Think you're confused, Touran is the people carrier, Tiguan is the 4x4. OP is looking at Touran which is most definitely much much bigger then a Golf, Leon or A3.

Have you considered a 1.6 TDi? We had one for a while as a courtesy car and I was pleasantly surprised. More than enough power and brilliant fuel economy.

Two of our loaners are 1.6 diesels; they are indeed very good. Had them both for a year, one is on 20k and the other about 17 with zero problems to report.

We have a 04 plate VW Touran 2.0 TDI Sport.

Its been a good car in terms of space and flexibility. It will happily return 45 - 50mpg indicated.
However, it eats front tyres, we had issues with porus head on the car that set us back £3k at a main dealer. DMF and clutch needed replacing recently which was expensive and the EGR valves are troublesome. Lots of rattling inside and all the trim is cheap plastic. Panel wise the metal used seems to be far thinner than the Audi i have and the car picks up car park dings very easily. Suspension is soft and can be rattly on country roads.

The build quality is no where near as good as my 52 plate Audi A4 1.9tdi, i have.

I wouldn't buy another and will get the wife an Audi a6 avant if i can stump up the cash or a a4 avant if i cant. VW service has been poor compared to Audi (but then you are paying more for the Audi to start with and subsequent servicing).

I have read that post facelift Tourans are much better cars. I believe this was around the 57 plate era.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for all the replies people!

Well today I made the decision, put a deposit on a 2007 touran 1.4 Tsi,
I had planned to get either an 08/09 car, but when this one came up, it's surely a very rare spec so I jumped at it!
To name a few it is a sport model, has chrome roof rails etc,
Leather interior, DSG gearbox, xenon auto headlights, dual climate, heated seats, cruise control, rear pdc, sunroof, auto dim mirror, highline display, folding mirrors, plus lots more I'm sure!

Drives perfect and is in really good condition with only 79k mms (approx 50k miles)

Looking forward to getting it now,
Will put up some pics once we have it.....

Sounds good to me, awesome spec for sure! Perhaps it was originally a demonstrator or VW press car when new? The 1.4 TSI is a nice engine I've got that unit in my Leon and am happy enough with it. In a Touran its pretty rare as the diesel seems to be the default option for many.

Thanks.

The TSI was a very popular car here in Ireland, as pre 2008, all road tax was CC based, so smaller engined car's were most popular, however, now from 2008, all cars are C02 based, so diesel is preferred post '08!

The car was bought by a lady with more money than sense apparently, thanks to her, I now have a lovely spec Touran..... hehe
