Its not too hard to set up a fake facebook and/or twitter account.
I would guess the images are usually stolen from social media pages in the first place.
And while yes, if you know where to look, there are plenty of ways of finding out the truth, but i wouldn't expect everyone knows them, or has reason to check up, after all, its the frog in the pan of water right?
I use a fake name for my FB, but I do have a few friends - surely it would look strange without interactions?I would guess the images are usually stolen from social media pages in the first place.

and lets face it, they could set up several, and post on each others, check in together... who knows what lengths some people will go to right?

what makes you think that just because its fake, they cant make it look legit, at least at a surface level? If they make a fair few friends/victims with this fake identity, whos to say?

That seems like a lot of work.and lets face it, they could set up several, and post on each others, check in together... who knows what lengths some people will go to right?

The lengths are extreme for sure. I do wonder if they ever get tires of it all.
It must be hard work living a lie.
if only we had someone prepared to admit to doing it and give a point of view from the other side...It must be hard work living a lie.
I mean, i kinda get the fraudster motivation, but those that do it because they are bored, or just like the attention... i really be interested in the why, especially when you see shows like the MTV catfish, and the hurt they can cause people, is it intentional, do they care? or is it all just a game?

Sorry to hear this. Do you ever feel like hunting him down?
Yes, and I live local to considerably local to his apparent 'real' address, but as the months went on I didn't want it to keep upsetting my sister. Carthage said:

You mean that isn't your real name??I just thought you were from some hidden corner of Nepal or some crazy place.
Not really, I have sometimes wondered though, but not bothered enough to ask why.

Escapism being one, they probably woukd be the ones to feel guilty.
Then thereare the ones who do it for fun, who probably don't care, or maybe even get sucked into it all themselves, and maybe do feel guilty.

^ Hi D, Hamish says hi
Back to the topic.
I had a middle aged woman student stalk me for a few years after I mentored her for one day as a favour to a colleague.....
I say "had" I should probably say "still have" as earlier this year she set up a Facebook account in her recently deceased husbands name to stalk me on there....
It's only when I rcognised the surname, googled it and found the obituary with her name on it as spouse that the penny dropped......
Absolutely fecking mental I tell ee, and I'm trained to spot em

Is this really a thing?
I sometimes get friend requested from attractive women I don't know on facebook. They invariably have two photos on their profile and some bullst status about living for the moment.
It's pretty transparent, instant delete. Might try going for one now, see what happens and try and wind someone up.

I got something like this a few months ago. A Friend Request and message from a nice-looking guy. I sometimes get friend requested from attractive women I don't know on facebook. They invariably have two photos on their profile and some bullst status about living for the moment.

I knew it had to be a scam if the opening gambit was "Hi, I love your pretty face...." My profile picture is my car.
I might see if I've still got it and string the tw@ along for a bit. If I can be bothered, of course.
I've only recently heard this term and found out what it means.
There's a "story" on twitter at the mo about some 20 year old Ian Watkins fan who catfished some 44 year old woman into thinking she was conversing with IW. She was so deluded she thought IW was still contacting her from jail while he was on remand. Crazy!
