Subaru forester 2.0 diesel advise on living with one please
Discussion
Hi all
I posted a while back about the quest to find a diesel car for the work commute.found a passat but never went ahead to many faults to be worthwhile.forward to this weekend the missus came home bouncing.and with out me had a test drive a forester Diesel and absolutely loved it.and according to her we can afford the 13k asking price it's on 13 plate I think.so to the piston head massive. Has any body owned one .what they like on a day to day basis fuel wise reliability etc.i don't want to jump into this one until I know some real world facts.its a lot a cash to us..first real decent car purchase.car will be used for work duties 60 mile daily commute and a weekend wagon 4wd will also be useful living in the welsh hills.
Thank you for any help guys

As a total subaru fan..im afraid I would avoid a diesel one like the plague.
out of possibly 10 diesel subarus I have had, I think only 2 have not needed major work, or sounded like they will do soon. Petrol ones are a different matter. along with legacy and outback, they are fantastic cars.

You've had TEN diesel Subarus, when they have only been selling diesels for 6 years?! That is going some...out of possibly 10 diesel subarus I have had, I think only 2 have not needed major work, or sounded like they will do soon. My experience only covers new engines (test and development), and I was impressed. Sorry to hear that you have had so many poor ones (surprised you kept getting more!). It is fundamentally a good engine IMO.
Ah, should have added, i am an indy, sell all sorts, but have a like for subarus, we prob sell 100 or so a year. opinions i imagine will fall in two camps, those who change their car every few years and will be happy enough and maybe lucky enough not to have problems, and those who buy subarus and keep them forever and expect to cover lots of miles with no issues... I tend to deal with lots of the latter, we regularly retail these cars with well over 100k, mostly about 70 or 80k to people who have had them before and only changed because their own was was dog eaten and track battered to death. The second lot dont want the diesels if they do any research. For the record the 2.5 non turbo is imo the best engine ever to grace subaru, fantasic on fuel, decent enough power and if you keep an eye on oil levels, seem to last for ever.
I didn't live with one for long. My impreza was in the garage for some work and they gave me one for a week.
Nice but the boxer diesel isn't as effcient as a big standard diesel. I enjoyed it though, wasn't a horrible place to be. Made me consider finding an old one for tip run duties and general snotting.
Think I was getting about 40-50 mpg in it which isn't too bad.

42mpg ish, is what the average trip seems to show on ones i have seen, this will obv vary depending how its used. Another down side is the lack of low box, like all modern diesels they are easy to stall from take off, a low box would help this when towing. I must add, i really wanted to like them, but im afraid i will remain a petrol subaru man.
Big Subaru fan too ( impreza hatch currently ) , though I have no personal experience of the boxer diesel I have not heard lots of good about it. Its should be smooth and fairly quiet , I also think the economy is acceptable for full time awd. But I have seen some horror stories about serious engine problems.
Have a quick look at these in the Subaru section

There is a 2011 2.0D from a Subaru main dealer with 53k on it for £11k ( is the mileage much lower on the one you have seen ? )
Could pick up a 2.0 Legacy petrol 2011 for less than 10K and enjoy solid reliability and decent sound effects. Bank your savings for extra fuel :-)
Good Luck !

I think I'd agree with this - my other half gets 38mpg average running around the country roads of Lincolnshire in her 2.5 Outback with a slushbox. Great car.Good Luck !
