Not quite clear on the rules with SORN and insurance.

Just made the SORN declaration, I had paid tax until May so should be due a refund.

Re insurance, I'm fully comp, I think it expires on about 20/12/14.

Do I need to do anything or can I let it just expire on the due date?

Thanks

Yes - refund should be sent in the post to RK

You can do as you like - cancel insurance let it run out whichever suits

If it's a summer car laid up for the winter - consider the risk of no cover as opposed to laid up cover which can be quite cheap and is purely based on value of the vehicle

As long as the SORN declaration has been made and the car is kept off road, you can cancel the insurance now or simply allow it to lapse - either would be fine.

You can have a vehicle SORNed but insured, no problem.
You can have a vehicle SORNed and uninsured, no problem.
You cannot have a vehicle untaxed or unSORNed.
You cannot have a vehicle taxed and uninsured.

Agreed with one exception - option 3 can happen legally - you can have a vehicle untaxed and unsorned - one of mine is exactly that

Ah, it was that last one I was concerned about albeit had it the wrong way round... ie insured but not taxed.

Thanks all.

If it's been off the road since the '90s, and the introduction of SORN, then - yes...

My RS2000 has been off the road since 1998 but I still got contacted for the SORN quite a few years ago, so I have to update it each year now. How far back do you have to go before you wouldn't have been bothered by SORN? I think at one point I was concerned that I'd lose the reg number, so maybe it was me who initiated the SORN, but I can't remember now.

When they introduced the V5C, then when they changed the colour of it, they only sent new ones to cars they knew/believed to still be alive - basically, they used it as an excuse to winnow out the long-dead-but-nobody-bothered-telling stuff. So, at that point, you probably nudged DVLA. They don't seem to have quite joined up the dots on SORNing those, though. I know I've got one that's been off the road since before SORN, although I bought it after, and I've nudged them (hardish) a couple of times about V5Cs - yet they still don't seem to bother about SORNing.

You were very unlucky sir, or they've changed the bleeding rules yet again/making it up as they go which is what we expect from DVLA.

I had a motorcycle that had been off the road since 1986, when I bought it and attempted to sorn it they told me it couldn't be done.

It is actually now sorn, having been rebuilt it has been taxed, and is now just laid up for the winter.

It's not really a problem as I just go online and declare it SORN for another year when I get the reminder.

The bigger problem is that I never seem to get any closer to getting round to working on it as the last time I did I cut my face with an angle grinder. I have charged up the battery though and almost got it started earlier today, I think the petrol is stale.

You won't get a reminder anymore. Like a rescue dog, SORN is for life now unless you tell DVLA otherwise.

Really ?

That actually makes sense, most unlike rules on vehicle ownership/use these days.

Are you sure ?

Is it forever unless you sell it then the new owner needs to re sorn, or have they become really really sensible ?

Yeah that change was incorporated when CI rules rolled up into SORN

SORN is now a once only process - it ceases to be SORN if ownership transfers or if re-taxed

Ruined a revenue stream for DVLA so now they are having to work harder at other revenue streams or existing ones

Yep, it changed last December.

Change of keeper still cancels SORN, but otherwise SORN lasts until it's next taxed.

Yes I am a muppet!

It was a wire cup brush thankfully (well that's better than a cutting disc eek). The cup brush snagged and then kicked back causing my arm to bend towards my face where the brush made a glancing blow. I thought I'd got away with it until I saw the blood. I now have a full face mask instead of the goggles, ear defenders and gloves I was wearing that day.
