It would be better to get it retained before you start selling the car.

Whilst creating hassle for any potential buyer and putting your plate at risk.

I wouldn't even bother going to view a car that wasn't ready to be sold, let alone make an offer for it. You may get lucky and not have a buyer as moody as me, but you may not...

As has been said, get the plate off the car before advertising. Save yourself a whole world of pain.

last time I did this

1. send off forms.
2 get back green slip with stamp showing new reg and replacement mot with new reg (5-10 days)
3. wait on new V5, anything between 10 - 28 days.

anyone tried this recently?

I would imagine bugger all - But advise them when the old plate is back on the car, no doubt there will be a fee of sorts.

You do nothing until you get the letter or logbook back. Then call insurers and swap over.
As others suggest, do it now before you sell it.

You'll be notified of your new/old/replacement number almost immediately and a couple of weeks before the updated V5 plops onto your doormat. Then the insurance company is but a phonecall away.
If you're going to be replacing the car once sold and keeping with the same policy/company then there's a chance they may be lenient with any prospective admin fees, but it's worth remembering a Cherished Plate is a luxury item and as such its legitimate use must be paid for.

I went through all this when I decided I wanted a different car.
Before I even started looking for a car I had applied with dvla to retain my registration & my old car then returned to its original registration it was on before I put my plate onto the car.

I retained my plate in full knowledge that I would be driving round for a unknown time on the cars normal age related plate but also knew that if I found a car I wanted if I wished I could part exchange or sell my car without having to worry about the plate and transfer time.
Yes it cost me a admin fee from my insurance but the car was returned to its original plate and I still had the plates so refitted them without getting any others made.

As it happened the car I found as my current car wasn't at a dealers but the seller liked my old car so we came to a agreement & exchanged cars (with some cash due to the car I have now being newer and worth more)
If my plate had still been on my old car it would have complicated things and possibly made the deal a no go situation.

I've just bought a car and a private plate and agree with the above - would have much prefered it if the seller sorted his st out before selling the car - i have no interest in his plate, and now it means i have to wait longer to get the V5c in my name, I have to call my insurer twice to inform them of a plate change, and I have to pay to get a new set of plates made up when the new reg arrives.

Seriously, take the plate off the car NOW. then only when the paperwork comes through do you sell the car.

Just to update this I tried this link on Tuesday, to remove our private plate.
We received a full new V5 today with the revised plate, I have to say I am shocked by how fast this was done!
