I have a load of scrap metal - old alloy wheels, lead off the roof, car batteries, elec wire etc probably two tons.

It's all come from my own cars and refurbing my house.

However I'm unsure if I need a waste licence to take it to a recycler ?

I've separated it into ton bags, wire, copper, lead etc but I also have washing machines etc will they take them ?

Any other tips ?

Thanks

No licence required to take it to the scrap dealer. The one I use takes absolutely anyting. I suspect others are similar.

As long as its metal/scrap owned by you and not from any trade then there's no issue with transporting it there and just turning up. Some may wish for proof of ID before the transaction, so it might be worthwhile bringing along your driving licence and a gas bill etc.

It's not the dealer asking for a licence I was concerned about, it was about being stopped on the way there / at the gates.

I've googled but I end up finding info about scrap dealers rather than the public taking their scrap.

A bit vague really !!
If you follow the letter of the law, everyone that takes stuff to the local dump should have one !!
Register for one free of charge anyway.

Are you 'Trade'? I.e. Building trade, Motor trade etc whereby someone could accuse you of these items being a byproduct of your job?

You only need a licence if it was produced as part of your business. The scrappie will probably ask for ID though (they're supposed to under law now) and is likely to only pay by cheque or BACS - no cash.

Washing machines, etc. ought to be fine.

Ha, i got turned away last weekend at our local tip, because I needed a INERT WASTE CERTIFICATE because I wanted to tip about 10 broken concrete paving flags, I couldn't believe it !

Why they couldn't just note my reg and confirm I resided in the borough, and then tip it I just don't know

Seems they want to limit tipping, surely this is going to increase fly tipping ?

No licence is required if it is household. They may or may not take a washing machine; don't expect much for it if they do. Even stripped down, the steel is worth very little, and the cost of disposing of the electrical components and concrete blocks gives them very little margin.

Whereas my local recycling centre would happily take that, no questions asked!

And you wonder why fly tipping is rife! Getting rid of rubbish should be simple and free (up to a point), trade or not.
Not so long ago, our local dump banned trades taking plasterboard in. 'Sorry mate, hazardous waste. But if you take it home again and put it in a black sack, you can then return and put it in the big bin over there which has 'plasterboard' written on it'. fking unbelievable.

In the trade, it now costs us almost more to get rid of oil and filters than it does to buy it. That can't be right.

I took some stuff to the metal recycling scrap yard just last week, leftover car parts etc…
They needed ID - either photo driving licence and/or passport, they also took the car reg.
Also required bank account number and sort code, and transferred the money directly into my account. No cash allowed.
No license required, but it may be different if its 2 tonnes worth.

These rules where set to apparently deter theft of metals, like the lead off the church roof etc. But the reality is more likely to be so the government can tax you on your scrap metal back pocket pay out!

A scrap metal dealer near me will give you a pre-pay credit card with the scrap value credited to it. Another has a cheque cashing shop on the same site.

Took 4 tyres up to Bracknell dump recently.

'Scuse me - where do i put tyres?
How many?
Eh? 4, but where do they go?
You can leave 2. Over there.
2?
yes. Any more and we consider you trade.
I drive a 4 wheeled car
Thats the rules.
So i have to come back to dump the other 2?
Yes
What, drive out the exit and come back in?
No
In a few hours?
No
Tomorrow???!
errr, yeah i suppose so

I understand why so many end up in the river...

I had the same when clearing up old spare plasterboard offcuts when we moved house last year. Officious numptie: "Oh, you've got two bags of builder's waste, you can only tip one, you might be trade". Of course I am- all the builders round here operate using MkV Golf hatchbacks don't they? rolleyes I got the usual "I don't make the rules..." rubbish when pointing out the stupidity. I drove round the convoluted one-way system we have at our recycling centre, by which time our hi-vizzed friend was then on someone else's case and I was able to dump the second bag anyway (... I'm subversive me wink ).
