£100K Garage: David Flatman

England rugby star, pundit and PHer David Flatman (over) spends in his dream £100K classifieds spree

Name:David Flatman
Previously owned: "MK2 Golf GTI 8V/16V, 911 C2 and C4 S (both 996), 911 C2 (993), BMW 535d, Jaguar XFR."
Currently owned: "Range Rover Vogue SDV8."

Porsche 911 (964)

Cost: £29,995
Balance: £70,005
Why I chose it: "I'm not really a convertible type, but I find something irresistibly cool about a ragged 964 soft top that I'd use to thrap around in with the kids, on my own, or with the dogs. Mrs F thinks it's 'tragic,' so she can get the bus.

"I'm not crazy about this colour scheme, but I'd never wash it anyway. (Aesthetically) tattier the better."

Land Rover Defender 110
Cost
: £12,995
Balance: £57,010
Why I chose it: "Proper dog and load lugger, this one. And completely cool to boot. Love this practically-asleep V8, and adore the colour. Mileage doesn't count here as it won't likely pierce a 10-mile, Defender-novelty-value-wear-off zone surrounding my home outside Bath. They're a workout to drive, but who cares? Not me, and not my dogs. I'd never sell it."

Audi RS6 Avant

Cost: £64,950
Balance: -£7,940 [We'd argue the point but David's a big lad... - Ed.]
Why I chose it: "I think a new Range Rover is unbeatable as a family car (if size isn't an issue), but I can't get the model and spec I want for the money. Anyway, I've always loved the RS6. Drop the kids at school, take the family on road trips, lob the dogs in the back, or boot it and get to work on butchering those terrifyingly expensive tyres. Build quality, massive horsepower, and, for me, a lustworthy blend of brutal all round ability and understated, purposeful looks. Yes please.

"And by the way, I know I've spent too much, but I'm a good negotiator. This means I'd back myself to get a few quid off that Audi or a few more out of Mrs F (yes, that will involve some marital lying)."

Nice selection but being £10k over budget kind of defeats the object?

Totally agree about the 964. Mechanically sound but aesthetically 'rough' is uber cool as a daily.

That 964 looks fun. Not sure about the soft top or the colour but the 964 is my favourite 911 so...

Quite. A fine demonstration of the originality and controlled spending that professional sportsman are famous for in this country...

I wonder if this is feature needs to die given the quality of recent submissions.

£100k and not a single car that would be enjoyable to drive.

Worst 911 I can imagine for the money.

Defender bought solely for the aesthetic.

A fast Audi. The ultimate in 'fast but dull'.

The choices of someone who likes cars for everything but driving them.

Can't help but think that a C5 RS6 instead would have freed up half of that £100k to buy something else.

I agree the format is pointless and rather boring.
PH, I'm sure you can think of something more interesting to get us talking.

Seems like it's time of the month for some of you lot.

Just because there's no MX-5 or Elise or Ferrari or whatever doesn't make it boring. What's boring is if we all wanted the same.

Moan, moan, moan indeed.

He's chosen a good value 911 - many a petrolhead would do likewise. A Defender - anyone living in a rural area and owning dogs/kids will appreciate this car! Finally, and somewhat controversially he's opted for a budget busting RS6 - most 'what car?' threads on here will receive a plethora of over budget suggestions.....Also, most 'what fun car for expectant father?' threads will include many many RS6 or similar suggestions! David is a family man.

Bunch of miserable, hypocritical gits.

Cool Defender, 1/3 isn't bad I suppose hehe

Personally I'd have been looking at a Jaaaaaag instead of the Audi.

Wheel/ mirror combination on the 964 is all kinds of wrong. Clear lenses are just about alright.

Yes, you miserable old bunch!

Actually, I did have a few more exotic cars on the shortlist but, when I imagined actually having the money to spend, this is where it'd go.

I think they're all great choices, obviously, but they won't be for everyone. I've never read a £100K garage yet that I'd replicate, but I think that's the idea.

As for professional sportsmen being renowned for a lack of originality when it comes to spending money, I think that's a rather lazy little statement. Still, it did make me giggle as I looked out at my cherished, battered Jeep Cherokee and its faded paint, doors that won't lock (don't tell any robbers), and with the words 'High Output' stuck on its broken boot. That power-related lie aside, I don't think it gets much more original for a few hundred quid. The thing just keeps going (slowly).

Anyway, I love PH as much as you guys do, and can't wait to get stuck into the next mug who tells us what they'd buy!

DF.

Good on you for commenting. Variety is the spice of life, and you have a genuine (and horrendously bad taste) interest in cars, which is what this place is all about! smile

Actually I drove a new MX-5 recently. It was fantastic, but way too small for me. I'm a big chap and drive loads of miles where I like performance but need quiet, comfort, good Bluetooth etc. Dull, maybe, but also true! And the Landie would be horrid to drive, but those I've had before I miss and regret selling. Quick journeys around my village and taking my kids and dogs to various streams and fields would be an event. A bumpy, noisy event, but an event nonetheless.

I love driving, but I have such limited use for focussed vehicles that it'd be a waste. I'd love a GT3 RS or a 918, but I'd never bloody use it! Doesn't help having a wife who has zero interest, of course.

Not everyone wants the same stuff. I happen to relish that fact. Drive on!
