Hey, was wondering if anyone could help. I am getting some Vance & Hines Short shots for my FXDB Street Bob and have heard conflicting stories with regards to tuning / the V&H Fuelpak system. Just changing the exhaust, do you think I need it or is it overkill? It does look pretty cool though...

it will work ok but it wont be optimal. Usually a "stage 1" tune as Harley call it, is exhaust, air filter and tuner (fuel pak) ...might be worth 5bhp but often feels like more

I have been led to believe that the modern H-D's will adjust the air/fuel mix depending upon the O2 sensors so you don't need to re-map a simple exhaust change. As said above, it won't be optimal so re-mapping will always help.

I have a V-Rod that I re-mapped with a Power Commander when I changed the exhaust, run topless with a K&N filter (no air filter cover). The map did make it run significantly better but is is a 2007 model, is a significantly different H-D engine and don't think its quite as clever as the new ones.

Ive got a 2012 V-Rod and have a super tuner on it and have it mapped for the Vance and Hines exhaust

They will cope with minor fuelling changes like if you just fitted a road legal slip on with baffles . But many Harley owners fit something more straight through with minimal baffles, where you do benefit from a specific map for the exhaust.

The Vance and Hines fuel pak comes with maps to suit all their pipes/bike combinations...

Please don't use a Fuelpak they are very basic, Harley dealers push them because they have more profit in them. I recommend a Powercommander 5. I get gains of at least 8bhp even on a completely standard bike even before you fit any exhaust or air filter. There are hundreds of library maps available for Harleys for free on the Powercommander.com site. It's still worth getting a custom map though so you know it is perfect for your bike.

The Fuelpak i have been looking at it made by vance & hines and links to your mobile via bluetooth.. it looks like a decent bit of kit.. problem i have now is finding a half decent handlebar holder for my mobile.. my phone is waterproof so i dont need one of those horrible little zippy bag things but i just hate plastic on the bike... will continue the search when i get to the office!

You dont ride around with the tuner on..you tune the bike once and it lives under the seat or is disconnected

A dynojet powercommander IS a step up, particularly if you want to mod further down the road. Or the offical Harley "super tuner". Its locked to your bike once installed so you cant resell it, otherwise is a good tuner and you can download the software to run on your laptop if you so wish. Otherwise the dealer will just flash the ECU with it when they fit the exhaust. Again it comes with all the common maps for V&H pipes

If you just want a bike phone holder, Ultimate add-ons do some good ones, check amazon. Thats what I use occasionally when I want to use my phone for navigation. Otherwise its in my inside jacket pocket

Likewise, look at somewhere like wiggle for a phone holder for a bicycle. The mounting brackets are totally adjustable and will fit anything, anywhere. I bought a really flash one for my push bike, that leaves the bracket behind and the connectable case on the phone which then locks in when you want to use it. It was about 20 quid.

I've got V&H Big Radius on my Sportster, I think it could benefit with a retune, I haven't got the money to do it just yet, notice quite a lot of bangs on mine now, will be getting a power commander 5 or Powervision for mine when I have the money.

Agree with most, the fuelpak is very basic but fairly cheap, you cant expect it to run perfectly in all conditions.

Patriot Top fueler is similar to the fuelpak with a few more options

PC5 is a good option with loads of maps available and can have the autotune feature which will constantly fine tune the map over time.

Specific to the XR1200 community the general concensus is to get your bike properly mapped by a professional and the guy recommended is Boz at powerglides. Of course this is the most expensive option

You pays your money, you takes your choice though.
