for those that can be bothered: join the DIY on a budget FB page.

Its a joy to behold as the solution to every problem is painting anything glittery. eg PVA glue, tub of glitter and some paint.

subsidence, house on fire, zombie attack, children being gased by defective boiler, collapsed drains, raw sewage pouring through ceilings.

That's right "paint it glittery, hun".

my personal fave was a woman painting her council owned, vinyl wet room floor, in glitter paint.

the best (cheap and unbelievable option) for low cost flooring it seems, is to wall paper the floor. I kid you not.

the cutting of door mats to form staircase treads is another gem.

I lasted less than 24 hrs before I was banned.

However on the "you're so council page" many examples of fine "council" DIY are posted by others. I can then still join in the mockery.

Don't you think all the copycat pages are getting a bit tired now?

My wife son and i was in a grill in De-Panne in Belgium last night, the place was heaving with families, every table that i could see had kids sat at on tablets or phones. Next table to us had some important gaming going on as the mother had cut up the early teenage daughters food and was feeding her as she played her game. Pathetic and ultra council.
Belgium is a council France.

thinking I've seen everything a tenant can do to a house by now- I agree, council type pages are a bit similar.

but then I never believed people would wallpaper a floor and think it would work, until now.

saying "was in" when you meant "were in" = heading towards council

Surely it would be a fry not a grill in De-Panne.

Is paying someone £50 to clean your oven council? I can't help but think it is when I see comments like "how much to clean my oven and microwave?". All I can think is "how much of a filthy animal are you that your appliances have reached the state you need to pay a not inconsiderable amount of money for someone else to clean them for you?"

£3 for some oven cleaner, spray the inside, leave it overnight, wipe it down in the morning. Job done.

My mate's brother and brother in law both run separate Oven Cleaning franchises.

Both of them do exceptionally well out of it and get far better results than any off-the-shelf cleaner would do for you, especially if you are using an old oven. It isn't one of those items you generally replace as soon as you move into a house is it, but giving it a quick spritz to "nearly as good as brand new" for £50 is better than doing it yourself!

Agree with that, distinction here is the ovens itself not the hob, well used ovens can become a right oily mess which a few quids worth of Mr Muscle will not even touch.

I have used a guy that does this twice now, and it always brings the oven back as good as new. Keeps the range cooker in fine fettle.

The chemicals the "pros" get hold of are a lot better than the off the shelf stuff easily bought from the shops, which is why (some) people pay someone to clean their oven. My first job was cleaning the rotisserie ovens in a supermarket, and the industrial cleaner I had made light work of it each night. One day I'd run out of cleaner and the next lot was delayed, so had to take some Mr Muscle or similar off the shelf to use. There was a significant increase in the amount of elbow grease needed to clean the oven that night!

Mind you, if you let your oven get to the state where you need to use industrial strength cleaning stuff, then yeah, perhaps you are council for letting it get so dirty. (And I think mine is overdue a clean!)

We ate at Moeder Lambik, which is opposite the Total petrol station. My best grill is The Sailors in Nieuwport. Sadly we hadnt booked and they had no space.

You mean to say that you can be both male AND long haired?
Not in my father's house you couldn't.
Come to think of it, not in mine either, though there have been a few facial hair disasters in all three generations, if I am being honest.

I'll kick you out of my home if you don't cut that hair!"

That's the one I've been too a couple of times and really enjoyed it. Will have to try The Sailors if it's better!

A few weeks back I was doing an bit of an overhaul to get a mates S2000 back on the road after being laid up for a few years, and part of it I did a full brake system bleed. I decanted the old fluid into an empty white milk container, and left it by the back door on his drive telling him to take it to the dump on his next trip.

My mate messaged me earlier, who shares the drive with his next door neighbour:
"Neighbours camera caught someone stealing a bag of their gravel AND a bottle of 'milk' from outside my door".

My wife works the counters in Sainsbury's - that oven cleaning stuff is lethal. The required PPE is long gauntleted gloves, breathing mask and safety goggles! - and she still gets skin irritations from it if she doesn't use a barrier cream.

My oven always looks like new after I clean it but then I don't let it get into such a state I guess. I'll be doing it again this week so I'll take some before and after shots biggrin

Like I said, one comment even mentioned doing their microwave!

Industrial ovens are another thing altogether though.

At The Sailors you will need to book, they only take euros, but there is a cash point further along the road. The service is slow so allow a good few hours. All the food is cooked on the indoor bbq right in front of you. Its that nice i dragged my family to it for my 40th birthday a few years agosmile
