How can I ensure that I get a factory built car and not a pre registered in stock car?
Bright pink with a lime green interior probably works.
^ This.

The only way to be sure of getting a built-to-order car rather than one that's been ordered for stock is to order some wierd combo that you can be certain won't be in stock.

I once owned a pair of Citroen CXs, VINs 130 apart. One was registered 8mo before the other - the long-lead car was a common colour, the other an unusual one.

Anyway, what does it really matter if the car's been sitting in stock somewhere for a few weeks or not? It will make precisely zero difference to the car, to the warranty or to anything. If it turns up in five days, has it been in a lot, or was it a built-to-order where the order was cancelled just before delivery, yesterday?

The whole process is a long one.
The new Focus RS are the cars being picked up from the docks the quickest at the moment, around 3-4 days before they're collected, but normally it's a week, maybe 2. Longer if the car cannot be started or it has issues (or is damaged)

I enquired about a Golf GTD today and was told 12 to 16 weeks for delivery.
I think VW are being cautious with delivery times, as if they had a long waiting list they wouldn't be offering such large discounts. My R was quoted as nearly 6 months when we put the order in, turned out to be just over 3 months. Right up and till the car left Wolfsburg they kept telling me the June delivery date, even though the build week was in March. Made it a right pain to get rid of the car it was replacing as I ended up with about a week to get the stereo (+ amp, speakers) removed and sell the car.

Where are they building the UK spec Fiesta STs?

I'm not sure if it's still the same but Renault generally build to order (this was a standard Clio, not Renaulsport). Mine took 4 months if I remember correctly, I was given a build week, the dates on various panels/stickers all matched up with that.

I was recently quoted 3-4 months for a fairly standard Skoda Citigo with no extras or odd requests.

On the opposite side of the coin, my Golf R over run and was more like 7 months instead of 6.

Evening all,

I enquired about a new car on Saturday, a new Fiesta ST if anyone's interested.

Anyway, when I enquired about the lead time from placing an order to delivery and was told 3 weeks worst case and 5 days best case.

Having never purchased a new car before I wouldn't know but is this normal? Surely they can't build and deliver a car in 5 days and this would be chosen from a prebuilt lot sitting next to a port somewhere?

Appreciate the replies in advanced.
are you sure that you should be driving a car?

If you're ordering a standard spec, there will be loads of them built, some to order, others for dealer's stock. What difference does it make if it's a car that a dealer, or dealer group has ordered as a vehicle for stock? It'll still be a new car, and even if it has sat in dealers compound for a few weeks, the upward facing panels, top edges of doors etc.. will be covered in rapguard or similar to protect the paint until final valet anyway

Just because a dealer has a car in their compound, it doesn't make it pre-registered

If you want to ensure you get a factory order, you'd need to order a non-standard spec, assuming that's even possible on something like a Fiesta

Ordered my ST-3 Black with orange seats in March and still waiting.
Getting an email tomorrow morning for an update.

3 days/three weeks for you would have been stock cars not built from your order.
Ditto this

Ordered st3 in blue with all the options 2nd week in march
Expected delivery early June

Op if you want a factory build, ask for one with an adjustable boot floor

Apparently it's not a option that is ticked very often so is unlikely to be fitted to cars already in the system

What on earth did you take from my post for you to come to the conclusion that questioning my ability to drive a car was the only answer?

You strange .

Thanks for the replies all.

I did eventually pull the trigger and ordered the car on the 7th, an ST3 with all but one option box ticked.

Had an update from the dealer today who claims that the car was assembled during the week and is currently sitting in Zeebrugge waiting to get on the boat. I should have the car by the end of May if all goes well.

Sounds plausible but as many have said it doesn't make much of a difference if the car is a few months old as registration and warranty will be as new..
