Evening

Looking for a set of tyres for my MK7 Golf GTI.

Looking at reviews, I think I've decided on the Michelin tyres over the new Continental 5's, but confused on the difference between the new Pilot Sport 4's and the Super Sports!

The PS4's don't appear to have rim protection....

Tyre size 225/40/18

Thoughts very much appreciated.

I don't know how the PS4 compares to the SS, but they have got quite chunky protection.An exposed rim would not be good.

The mpss is the more performance oriented tyre of the 2,

the Pilot Sport 4 replaces the Pilot Super Sport, despite the slightly confusing nomenclature. No idea if they are generally thought to be as good as the PSS though which everyone seems to rave about.

I don't think that's correct.

I seem to remember a conversation on here where it was confirmed that Michelin recommend the PS4 as an alternative to the MPSS as some sizes [of the MPSS] are phased out however that the PS4 is not a direct replacement i.e. more of a stopgap option between now and when the new MPSS is released.

I have nothing but praise for the MPSS. They are fantastic tyres.

In some sizes the PS4 hasn't been launched and the PSS is still the tyre to buy. Hopefully Michelin will sort that out in due course.

Yep, very much depends on what size you want. For many there is no choice, you only have one of the other. I'm getting the impression that MPSS is being phased out actually

Hello,

PS4 replaces PS3. PSS replaced PS2. PSS is sportier than PS4. PSS is not available in the appropriate load rating for a golf mk5 (88 instead of 92). I recently changed my tires on my ed30 golf and went for CSC5, which I know are very good.

Unless you have a particularly heavy Golf, you would have been fine with a 88 index tyre.

88 = 560kg maximum load per tyre
92 = 630kg maximum load per tyre

I will preface this by saying that the tyre place I use said that the PS4 replaces the SS, but they didn't have the SS so I went for the PS4. Love them. Quiet, inspire a lot of confidence in the wet and grip very well in the dry. I'm running a staggered setup on an E46. Lip protection is good, also. I like that.

In theory yes, but I guess the car will not respond the same as the tyre walls won' t be as stiff . I've read on another forum someone had to pump up the tyres to compensate for 88 charge index. Maybe I'm wrong though, it's not my personal experienceexperience, but it sounds logical enough to me

I'm amazed that pumping to higher pressure stiffens up the sidewalls.

I'm not convinced that MPSS replaced the MPS2. I had no trouble getting the MPS2 recently, whereas the MPSS was very hard to source.

A quick google shows that you are correct!

I am sure that i did the same thing the first time, as i didn't think that the Ps4 replaced the PSS, but i read an EVO article that suggested it did.

Confused, but yes, ignore my original post!

The mpss did not replace the ps2, it was developed With Ferrari for the 599GTO

Othe mpss is also available in 92y aswell as 88y,VW state 92 minimum,I have personally ran the 88Y on the mk5 platform with out any problems, they covered around 12k miles,rotating front to back @6k miles. The best road tyre in terms of grip and feedback /turn-in Iv experienced ( not including semi slicks)

I didn't check the load rating as I trusted the garage, when renewal time comes I'll make sure there 92y

88y @ £118 a corner https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/michelin/pi...

92y @ £128 https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/michelin/pi...
