just had an email from my opc asking me to register for Porsche car connect - which looks like an expensive tracker on an app to me !

bearing in mind I have not spec'd connect or connect plus - do I have to have this / or is it worth having ??

I would like to be a little better informed before I call them !

Thanks

M

For Porsche Car Connect you do not need to have specced Connect or Connect Plus...you have to agree Porsche really screwed up on the terminology they used for their technology packages...makes their Confounderator almost straightforward rotate

Take a look here for what Car Connect offers you:

All horribly confusing.

Anyhow I've signed up for the full monty so annual running costs are jacked up for tech I'll probably never use.

Porsche Connect is £266 per annum for remote services, accident reporting (if your airbags go off) and tracking.

PCM connect is free currently but likely to cost £120 per annum eventually for a bunch of apps that will be pretty average compared to your phone.

On top of that I've bought a SIM for the car. However have negotiated a good deal with EE for 3 SIMs at £8.99 each per month for 4GB data plus unlimited calls and texts.

Add in servicing, insurance and detailing I'm thinking that kids were less expensive than I keep telling them.

Bear in mind connect / connect + CANNOT be retrofitted so make sure you definitely aren't going to want / need the functionality - late spec change a possibility??

PCC is a tracker - it is factory fitted anyway - you just pay for the subscription

Ok, I'm confused.

Collected my new Porsche today.

Mentioned to my OPC that I was looking forward to trying the Car Connect Service.

All he said was that they can set up the Tracking Service at a cost of about £200 but it was up to me if I wanted to or not. End of discussion, nothing else mentioned. I have no interest in paying for the tracking service but would like the 'where is my car located', 'is it locked' and 'turn on your heater' type services which a brochure I picked up today suggests is free for 12mths (or even 24mths, it's as clear as mud).

I've just been on Porsche.com/connect and it says I should have registered for the service prior to delivery so I could provide my dealer with the generated 'installation code'. Nobody mentioned this!

Can anyone answer?

Will the car have to go back to the OPC to have Car Connect turned on?
Do I assume this is free?
What services are free with the basic Car Connect?
What is the data usage like on the SIM you have to buy separately for the car?

I received this email from my OPC a few days before delivery;

Your new car is fitted with Porsche Car Connect, which includes vehicle tracking system and other services which are subscription based. To register, please click the link below and create an account. If you are already registered please log in and add a new vehicle. Prior to collection we need the 8 digit installation code to activate your tracking system.

Neil, did you spec Connect+

As I understand it - the Car Locator app and other remote services you mention come with Connect + ...

Also the only thing I can remotely control is retracting the wing mirrors and the novelty of that has worn off.

I bought a dedicated SIM but I now think there's no real benefit compared to pairing my phone.

On my M235i I have on occasion used the Car Locator app in the enormous car parks at both Heathrow and Gatwick, after coming back from trips, and having no idea where I left my car irked.

Other things like remote flashing of lights or honking of horn, I tested each once for the novelty after I bought the car and not done again since.

But doesn't real-time traffic info come down over the SIM? Real-time traffic is the main reason I specced Connect +.

Neil read this thread as there is some useful info:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The SIM card is for Connect+ realtime traffic.

Whether you have specced Connect or Connect+ is irrelevent for Porsche Car Connect which everyone gets. Porsche Car Connect allows you to use the Apple or Android app to remotely control certain car functions and access certain services which are described here:

https://pcc.cobratelematics.com/cwp/login.do

I believe the Remote Services and Safety Services are free for 12 months but the Security Services (tracker) are not. You must complete the service installation form and supply your dealer with your 8 character code to activate Porsche Car Connect Services - if you haven't opted for the Security Services you won't get them but you should get the Remote and Safety Services.

Correction to the above as I have just had my Car Connect services enabled and all you get for free (and for 12 months only) are the Remote Services so you have to pay for Safety and Security Services.

Cheers.

Ta for your prompt and useful replies as always.

Car booked back in to have Car Connect 'installed'.

It was the service manager who answered the phone. Wasn't impressed that the sales team hadn't let me know this should have been done prior to delivery. furious

He's probably responsible for signing off the PDI. Sounds like he should be transferred to a Fiat dealership.
