It occurred to me this morning, when unlocking the house, that, as far as I'm aware, the concept of having a small handset with a button on it to unlock and lock your door does not exist for houses, even though it does for cars. Or maybe it does exist but hasn't become a mainstream thing. Why not? I've often thought it would be much easier, particularly when you're laden with shopping. Why is this not a thing?

What other things should exist, but don't?

So it exists, but I'm surprised they haven't become mainstream by now. Given that the most lowly of cars have remote locking I'm surprised that these aren't standard on new housing developments and on replacement doors from all the well known companies.

Having seen someone suffer from Parkinsons Disease and unable to control the shaking motion in their hand as they tried to lift a spoonful of food to their mouths, would it be so difficult to engineer a spoon where the bowl was on a pivot to the handle which contained some form of damper to stop the vibrations reaching the bowl?

Leaving your car unlocked by accident because you didnt click the button properly, (or clicked it twice by accident) is one thing. Leaving your house unlocked due to the same is another.

I wouldnt trust it personally.

But your hallway lights could flash twice and you could link it up to your surround sound to give an audiable "beep beep" when its locked wink

I did Google. I was more interested as to why it hasn't become standard fitment by mainstream developers.

You could have light on the door which is red for locked or green for unlocked, or whatever.

The costs associated compared to a tried and tested £30 lock is prohibitive I would imagine.

I presume in a power cut it stays locked rather than unlocks itself? But in this instance, how do you get in or out?

Lots of things to consider which means its probably a bit of a faff in reality.

My OH's 1 Series has a plastic handset which plugs into the dashboard. However, this has a metal key built in which can be pulled out if necessary to facilitate locking/unlocking the car in the conventional manner. I imagine the same.

To anyone passing by, that would just show that you had forgotten to look your house and encourage a break in

The wifes new car has a phone app that tells you if the car is locked and alarmed among (quite a lot of) other things. It would be handy to be able to check the house as you were sitting in departures and had the worrying about what you'd forgotten start.

Few stupid ones I came up with the other day, they might already exist though:

1. Butter slices - as we all know trying to spread cold butter on bread is a PITA, so something like a really thin version of a cheese slice exactly the same size as a regular slice of bread made from butter (obviously). Remove from wrap, slap on bread, job done biggrin

2. After watching last night's Dragons Den something a bit like expanding foam for dog owners that you can squirt over a poo which would then set hard in a matter seconds enabling you to pick it up with ease.

They already have this, and have done for many years, at the main post office in my town. You can buy stamps, print your own labels for parcels and pay for them having had them weighed to save queuing up. They also have all of the forms that people need such as passport application, driving licence application and so forth.

Similar to 1. - you can get a "butter grater" which is a knife-type utenstil with a grater style blade so it shaves the butter off into thinner slivers that spread far more easily

I can remember postage stamp vending machines set into the outside wall of the Post Office, next to the post box.
They were about the size of a shoe box, and mechanically operated byban escapement mechanism. You had to lift up a metal flap to insert your sixpence into the coin slot, and the stamp would slowly be wound out of a lower slit. You would then tear it off at the perforations.( The installed stamps came on rolls. )
It was handy to avoid queueing, and was available for use 24/7 before the term came into modern parlance.

These machines were done away with when the post office was closed in the late 70's IIRC. Of course the price had gone up from sixpence before then.

I suppose if they were to introduce a modern equivalent stamp machine, it would need a new plastic fiver inserting to get a first class stamp out. rolleyes

Puncture proof tyres? You can get solid tyres for bikes now, but in a car we're still obliged to lug around a spare wheel or can of foam.
