It is a sad reflection of the intelligence of people that, very, very sadly, there are 40% of the population that are thick and stupid.
Where did you pull that figure from?
Guy down the pub - Datum has a somewhat unhealthy hatred of Main Dealers, despite being involved in the trade himself, probably too much competition for him...

I don't know if its changed now, but the stickers EH used to put on their cars mentioning the 'admin fee' all started with the word Optional.

So when it came to a couple of cars I've bought from there, and another for my daughter, i simply told them i wasn't taking them up on it and they waived the fee without much fuss.

Alas, the last time i bought there for myself i too was given a nice diagram explaining why i should take up their impressive 'flat rate' finance offer instead of simply paying by card. In fact, so insistent were they, that their business manager was prepared to knock another £500 off the screen price if i did.
And so that's exactly what i did, i graciously accepted their generous proposal and took out the finance (something with 15% APR). The next day i called Black Horse and settled the balance at no additional cost - jobs a goodun.

OP reminds me when I was looking for my first car. I walked in and asked for two brochures. Next thing you know I've been guided to the sales manager sat with an order form ready. I asked how we got to that point and was told point blank that I was a time waster.

I assumed the admin fee was a salesman commission. Like leaving a tip at the restaurant.

I wouldn't buy a car with an admin fee.

Not really their loss, they still have the car and will sell it to somebody else.

If it was a good car I would say in this case the OP is really cutting of his nose for the sake of a principle and £26.
If you think a car is worth x amount, or you only have a certain amount to spend, where do you draw the line?

Only an extra £1000? £100? £26?

I can be a good car, and still not be worth what they're asking.

If you ordered a meal, based on the prices on the menu, then the bill came and there was an extra £26 charge on there that you weren't told about, would you happily pay it?
You would walk away from a good car for the sake of £26?

Madness I tell ye jester
Probably spend more in petrol getting to see his next car hehe

Had similar in a veggie buffet I went to once. Buffet is £10. Fine. But there's a £1 eat in charge.

£11 buffet charge would have been fine. But £10+£1 is not fine.

Not if the same car was further down the same road for the exact same price but without the admin fee.

Had this when we bought our car for cash from Motorpoint with their £99 "pre delivery fee".

Went to view / test drive and when looking round noticed offside front tyre half inflated / low treasure warning showing in dash so couldn't test drive until sorted which at 6pm isn't happening that day.

When we returned another day the 'fee' was on the invoice so said 'you can remove that for a start as it wasn't checked prior to delivery was it!' for which they apologised and took it off. shoot

But you wouldn't necessarily know that at the time you walk away for the sake of £26. Mind you, you would probably buy a Roller or something similar for the £26 hehe

I knew a guy once who claimed he had 25 years experience in his job, turns out it was actually 1 years experience repeated 24 times.
In other words 'Experience is no guarantee of ability' a mantra I preached in many business roles when encountering people who had spent too long in their job & much older than me. For them it was a very painful & belated wake-up call which generally meant they were encouraged to walk, or accept a lesser role.

Low treasure warning? Surely buy a better map and set sail on the high seas

I do hate a low treasure warning.
Was this the car you were trying to buy?

I'd forgotten the £20 for fuel.

Had this last year at a family dealers, refused it but the car still came with half a tank. Bet if I'd paid £20 I wouldn't have got tree quarters of a tank.

This time HE tried the £20 trick, there is a shell garage right next door so even if I'm running on fumes when picking up I'll still reach the Shell garage.

Sales rationale was people like to drive their new cars rather thn make a trip to the garage and it was out of goodwill that they did this.

Goodwill FFS.

Bet they put 315 maximum in and anything like half a tank will get zero addition, but its good for the salesmans xmas bonus!

Well the day came.

Money in the bank debit card in hand.

That cost me 1.5% extra, he told me about it,he assured me did the sales man did. i didn't recall.

For the record the fee was about £12, working out how long this would waste my time and the fact I had an insurance policy of the never used spare in my garage I thought fk it!

Paid up left happy.

Sales man calls me about the fact he didn't have a copy of my Insurance Docs.... for audit purposes.

He never asked, but I'm a kind sole and I promised to send him paperwork relating to the policy.

What I've sent is an invoice from my company, because I'm a powerfully build director and can do that sort of thing.

I'm not expecting payment, but at least I've been honest in telling him he'll get some paperwork. Job done!

If they pay then the proper docs will be released.

1.5 sounds a lot for debit cards, we charge .29%. No idea why they need your insurance documents though, surely that's down to you not them.

We don't charge for debit cards but we do charge 2.5% for credit cards.

As for insurance, well back in the good old days when insurance proof was required to tax a car we requested it so as to tax the car for the customer, now it's all done online and it's down to the customer whether they are insured or not.

You paid 1.5% of £10,500?

Ahoy me hearties, too much rum in me belly when eating the galley grub wobble It surely be that one with the Cummings marine diesel in the engine room and parking sonar fore and aft drivingsonar

Am I the only person who hasn't got a clue what is going on here ?

The place charges 1.5% for a card fee but it's OK because the poster has a spare tyre at home. They call and ask for a copy of his insurance and, for some bizarre reason, he says he'll provide that but, instead, he sends them an invoice for payment. Poster claims to be some kind of benevolent fish....

Feels like some kind of crazy acid trip !!
