Jaguar XKR: PH Carpool

Why this Germany-based PHer has found plenty to love about his big Jag

Name: Robert Kwiecien (resonic)
Car: 2007 Jaguar XKR
Owned since: February 2015
Previously owned: Opel Astra F, BMW 325e (E30), Subaru Impreza WRX GDA, Fiat Grande Punto (current daily driver)

Why I bought it:
"I wanted my new car to be a V8 coupe with a full aluminium body. That limits the choices to a very small amount of cars. Actually there were just the XK, XKR, Audi R8 and Vantage V8 on the list. The XKR won the competition with its style, affordability and performance. I love the design and it doesn't bother me when it is mistaken for a DB9 all the time."

What I wish I'd known:
"It doesn't have a water temperature gauge on the dash and actually there isn't one to find. This makes it clear that this sort of car points at a customer base that really doesn't care about the car and just parks it in front of the Jaguar service department once a year. This is clearly not the sort of car where the regular customer does anything by himself. This disturbs me a bit as on my previous cars I could do anything by myself."

Things I love:
"The design, the ride, the comfort and the looks you get. I also love the fact that it actually has a huge boot which makes it a great car for daily use. The ride is also very smooth but still controlled enough. You have no feel for the speed at all. Going 120mph in the XKR feels like going 60mph in a regular car. Everything is silent except you floor it in a tunnel and hear a huge thunder of V8 sound combined with a bit of supercharger whine.

"It doesn't matter what speed you drive and what gear you are in, it just goes! You just step down and lots of torque pushes you forward. The ZF transmission is fantastic, it is nearly as fast as a dual-clutch and I guess most people won't even notice that it is a classic ZF automatic with a torque converter. Reliability is perfect. No issues with anything so far.

"Actually I would recommend anyone to also consider the naturally aspirated XK. It looks fantastic and 300hp is enough for most drivers. The normal XK is currently cheap to buy and will also provide the same reliability and the stunning design."

Things I hate:
"Entertainment is not up to date. The lack of MP3 file and directory lists on the main display when having the Jaguar MP3 kit installed is annoying. When parking in the city you definitely turn around 10 times when walking away from your car and hope nobody is going to put a dent into it."

Costs:
"Surprisingly cheap. In Germany insurance the 4.2-litre 420hp XKR costs me around 890 euros a year with full coverage including every driver. Annual road tax is 283 euros here. The service costs surprised me with 380 euros for the 2015 service and 255 euros for the 2016 service. Have to mention that I brought my own oil to the Jaguar dealer. Still even the Fiat Grande Punto is more expensive when an official dealer does the service.

"Fuel consumption is high - no surprises there. My regular city mix is at 22 mpg, then 28mpg on the highway."

Where I've been:
"Drove it through Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Lots of mountain and alpine roads, which are a pleasure to drive!"

What next?
"I would love to have an Alfa Romeo 4C or Jaguar F-Type. But I will probably keep the Jaguar for a long time while it is indeed reliable and still looks fantastic."

Love these cars, they would have to be one of the most perfect Gt cars.

Unfortunately it would cost over €1800 a year to tax this car in Ireland so maybe I should move to the land of the Autobahn..

Having owned an XFR and driven the 4.2 XKR, I'd recommend people try to buy the newer 5.0 Supercharged V8 XKR over the 4.2 Supercharged version. The larger V8 is simply wonderful, with linear power across the entire band and accelerates at 70 like it does at 30.

Do love the XK.

I have previously owned the 4.2 SC. When a close friend decided to sell his 5.0 NA I jumped at the chance.

Its truly one of the best cars I have driven. I have owned many many cars including Ferraris, Porsches of all type etc etc. Whilst my budget allowed me to spend more I could not (and still cannot) find a car that sounds as good, rides as well and is supremely comfortable on 300 mile in a day journey.

911s are lovely but you end up feeling frazzled after a long drive and they can feel a bit heavy around town (I have not yet tried the 991).

Big 7s etc are comfy but too big. The 535i I had was superb but a bit boring to own. Perhaps the 6 series may hold a candle to the XK.

My biggest concern will be how to replace it and I expect I will end up just keeping it forever as it will not be worth too much money very soon.

Negatives are the poor soundin B&W stereo and a few creaks and rattles that I am working my way though..

Crisply and engagingly written - impressively so, as it's not in the writer's native tongue.
Yes an enjoyable and well written article, but I could not see any confirmation English was not the writers native language.

I keep finding myself on the classifieds thinking about one of these are a future replacement for the Elise. Would be nice to have something as a contrast. Plus a V8 Jag's sound = cloud9

That basically summarises my experience of my XKR too. I'm finding my driving style adjusted from my old MR2 - there's so much power in the power steering it feels odd to be so much less engaged with the road. More difficult to judge the limit on corners so I err on the side of caution. I even wouldn't have noticed a rear off side flat had it not been for the increased noise crossing the cats eyes! This coupled with the extra length at the front (with less clearance) means I'm not ragging it round the country roads any more. Definitely more of a GT than a sportster. Perhaps I just need to go on a day course to learn the car.
I don't notice a supercharger whine in mine though; and while relatively quiet it's no Lexus!

The MP3 thing is annoying. It's just software, it's not outwith Jaguar's capability to make an update here.

Always thought these looked a bit ungainly, especially from the front, until it suddenly became a real looker after the 2009 facelift

I'm considering an XKRS as a weekend fun car - just worried it will be too GT. As a daily useable 2 seater (effectively) I don't think you can do any better for the money. Lovely things.

Weird, 2 carpools in a row I own !? Must agree with the thread owner, these are fabulous cars for the money. The level of comfort for a car with 20" wheels and such fantastic handling is astonishing. Seats are the most comfortable I've ever sat in. On the road the accessibility of the performance thanks to the smooth fast changing 'box makes it real world quicker than most cars with similar on paper performance. Only downsides are the fuel consumption currently getting 18-26mpg, but I've only had it a few months so still a little bit too enthusiastic I guess. Sat - nav / music interface is pretty poor and confusing and the engine is a little too muted. Overall I love it

Jags just don't age well after they pass about 2 years of age. It is a bizarre phenomenon.

Having exactly the same thought! Is this just too big/ too much a gt to be fun? Any owners chased a 997 across the alps?

Snap!

I agree about the seats, the most comfortable I've sat in on any vehicle, in fact, the driving position itself I find fantastic for my height (6'2")

Oh, and if you find it too muted, try pulling Fuse19 (in the panel between the rear seats). This will disable the active exhaust and leave the valves open wink

I'm loving mine a year into ownership, and I think the only thing I could replace it with is possibly a later 5.0 model.....

The analogue temp gauge in most modern (90's onwards) cars are mostly pointless anyway.

They are normally programed to sit dead center throughout a large operating range to instil owner confidence, then flick to red once the temperature reaches a set figure.

The Jag will still flag up an overheat condition via the central digital display, so it's not really any worse off.
