Star Wars: The Last Jedi (CONTAINS SPOILERS)
Discussion
This weekend it's become the 6th biggest US release of all time and the 9th biggest global release.
I'm sure many expected more from it financially, but it's been a pretty good earner. Given the merch income alone I can't imagine Disney will be sweating over their investment just yet.

I don't think they are at the profuse sweating stage, but they are nervous, and have been for some time. THe litany of reshoots reveal that, and if it is accurate that 90% of Solo has been reshoot, then that would be close to cacky trouser moment...if it under-performs.I'm sure many expected more from it financially, but it's been a pretty good earner. TLJ didn't get the 1.3 billion I had expected, and I thought that was lowballing it. My fagpacket economics says Disney made a profit of 206 million on the cinema release of this film, this doesn't include merch of course.

True - but a lot of that will have come along with the goodwill fans had off the back of TFA an R1. I'm sure many expected more from it financially, but it's been a pretty good earner. Given the merch income alone I can't imagine Disney will be sweating over their investment just yet.
Based on the reaction TLJ has got - I suspect future movies will have a much harder time. Much of the goodwill seems to have been eroded.
I’ll certainly be holding off a visit to the cinema for the next couple of films.

Also, although it has made a lot of money, I cannot help but think they could have made a whole lot more than they did, and I suspect the Disney big-wigs know this, behind closed doors.
What I am interested in, is if Kathy stays in charges. It's her vision now.http://epicstream.com/news/Rian-Johnson-Explains-E...
This film would have done well regardless of how bad it was because as others have said, it had a lot of good will due to TFA and R1 being pretty decent and people would have expected at least comparable quality going into this movie.
However it will be interesting to see how the next couple of movies do. As others have said, I won't be rushing out to see them on opening night again. Hopefully they tank and give Disney the real kick up the arse they need.
I'd also question why a franchise this big was given to Johnson in the first place? OK Looper was pretty decent but that's the only big movie he made before being given TLJ, nowhere near enough of a track record to decide whether he was just lucky with Looper or whether he has the directing chops for something like Star Wars, evidence would suggest not.
I feel he as a director and Kennedy as the lead exec just don't understand Star Wars at all.

As BO takings overall have been declining over the past decade (in the West), perhaps there still is some hope that many can no longer stomach lazy and sometimes preachy film making - and things may change for the better. I won't hold my breath, though.

I love the way detractors of the film are passed off as angry fanboys in the last paragraph of that article. I really am shocked at the presses reaction to fans who didn't like this movie.http://epicstream.com/news/Rian-Johnson-Explains-E...

That article is hilarious. Johnson has been backpedalling constantly since he realised he'd dropped the ball with TLJ and now he's trying to pass the buck for the most ridiculed and ridiculous part of the movie (the Leia Poppins bit).http://epicstream.com/news/Rian-Johnson-Explains-E...
It's just been a load of excuses after-the-fact from him. Regardless of who, what or why, the scene just looked stupid and it was a pretty stty way to cap Carrie Fisher's legacy.

I've been a fan since the first films came out and even stomached the prequels. At least they felt like star wars films.
Disney can do one. They are far too big now anyway.

Ironically looking at the demographics of Star Wars fans - it's those "angry fanboys" who pay to see movies multiple times, buy Star Wars lego kits etc and who are the Star Wars franchise biggest cash cow. Disney is shooting themselves in the foot by intentionally insulting or alienating them.
Same thing happened with GB3 which did worse than Ghostbusters 2 (and that's some feat). Will they never learn.
