Picking up my new car soon and the Dealer is advising I get the car coated with GTechniq product.
I dont really think I should pay another £800 to have the paint protected when the OE paintwork should be good enough. is this just a new "fad"? After all, we never used to do that when we bought new cars say 5-6 years ago.

I don't know if it's a fad. The technology moves on and these products were not available 5 -6 years ago.

I was going to have it done from new but it was going to be a real pain to arrange and I was unsure like you. Then a couple of months ago I had mine done. I was still unsure but went with it for a few reasons:

I think that a thin layer of 'something' over the paint work is going help avoid stone chips.
It makes the car far easier to clean.
It might help to preserve the original colour.
A place opened near me that did Gtechniq products so getting it done was a lot easier

Was it worth it? Well as a percentage of the cost of the car, it's quite small and I can't think it hurts.

Probably just get it done somewhere once you've got it? How much of that 800 is going to Porsche...

Speak to Reep Group directly (They are also the distributors in the UK for Swissvax) as they have a great working relationship with Porsche GB and go into the dealerships to do the work there for customers if that is more suitable.

I am getting my Macan GTS done before delivery and I had my BMW 4 Series done and it really makes a difference protecting the wheels and bodywork and also makes it much easier to clean the car.

Normal price is £600 I think but am sure that is negotiable.

I have gone the GTechniq route on my past 4 new cars. As well as looking the biz, the cars are a lot easier to clean and keep clean, as most of the dirt/bugs/brake dust can be blasted off with a pressure washer.

Not sure what your £800 is getting? They product is relatively cheap, less than £100. Unless the paintwork is going to be lightly machine polished to perfect the surface, it is no pont in applying polishes to poor paintwork. Nor is getting the car professionally prepped and protected if you intend to take it to the local car wash or chap in the supermarket carpark. May as well save your cash.

Not sure where you are, but I get mine done by Justin of exclusivecarcare.co.uk you can get a 'new car detail' for much less.

£800 seems steep for a new car. I had a Gyeon (similar sort of ceramic coating to Gtechniq, I believe) on my 996 and, even with extra bits of maintenance required for the older paintwork and general condition, it was a lot less than that.

Staffordshire Car Care did a cracking job:

https://www.facebook.com/Staffordshirecarcare/vide...

As others say, the coating offers a bit of protection to the paint, makes it easier to clean/maintain, and is guaranteed for a few years.

I'd get a price from a local detailer before forking out £800 to Porsche

one point about taking the car to someone independent of the dealer, rather than linked to them, is they can and will bring your attention to any serious paint defects that may exist. Unfortunately, at any price point, this is something of an issue on a small number of new cars, irrespective of the marque.

I've just had my Golf Clubsport done with Gtechniq, inside and out, and it was less than half the £800 you've been quoted. Had it done by Matt at Off Your Marks

which product though there are many at all price points. Gtechniq black is the pro product, a lot apply "EXO and Crystal Serum light " not the 7 year Black product as not all places are Black approved.

I cannot see "OFF YOUR MARKS DETAILING" as an approved Black reseller/fitter on his website or Gtechniq . but they can all fit EXO and Crystal Serum light as it's a DIY product which a lot of detailers also apply.

and of course the cost reflects the level of beforhand detail needed, prep as always is key and where the cost is. some cars might need 2 day work some might need a wash !

I and not sticking up for anyone or anything, I don't have a Gtechniq coating on my cars, I use a £30 product which I love and do myself so even £400 looks crazy to me :-)

But prices really are a moot point as most of the costs quoted are prep and that's by a car by car thing.

TBF, when Mrs Digga's Range Rover was done, because it was a new car, it took a lot less work than my 15 year old (as it was) 996, and was charged accordingly. It's a product that is guaranteed for several years, so sounds very similar to premium Gtechniq - from memory, £400 odd sounds about right.

Can't recommend Gtechniq highly enough. Have had it applied to my last two Porsche's & will get it applied to my latest - 997 turbo. Had it applied to a new 981 Spyder by a Gtechniq approved detailer. I would only get such a product applied by an approved Gtechniq detailer. There are also various Gtechniq products - as mentioned the 'Black' (CS + Exo) is their top product & offers a seven year guarantee. The cost to get my Spyder done was £800 & included machine polish, exterior paint coated, glass coated, wheel rims coated, roof protected & interior protected. They had the car for two full days. i used the Spyder as a daily including winter & after almost a year it still looked in showroom condition & had no swirl marks or spidering of the paint. Recently picked up a 997 turbo & the first thing it will have done is a full Gtechniq detail.

You bought you 997 Turbo/Sold you Spyder to JZm didn't you ? If you're localish to them I'd be interested to know who you use for your Gtechniq application.

Hi Cheib, For my Spyder I used Warman Detailing nr Huntingdon. not really near JZM I'am afraid. But if you don't mind a trek they are very good & will get them to do my 997 turbo.

As others have said, there are several GTechniq protection products at different price points - C1, Crystal Serum Light, Crystal Serum, then there is the EXO coating, plus other products for wheels, glass, plastic, leather, carpets etc.

I have had the Crystal Serum Black applied to a dark blue Macan and it beaded well for the first year (EXO) and the Crystal Serum definitely has reduced swirls forming. But don't believe the marketing which says it can only be sanded off - TCut will get through it.

But it is good, especially the C5 for the wheels.

I had it applied to my black M2 as well.

But protect from stone chips it will not, light surface scratches and swirls only. But it protects from bird lime and tree sap.

I would approach a detailed directly and they will do it at the dealership. Look at the GTechniq site and contact the local approved detailed direct.

Had Gtec applied to my son's A45 AMG last year looks the business , so much so I've just had my wife's new S3 done .

I had the S3 delivered from the dealer totally unprepared four days before collection, picked it up direct from the detailer.

Well worth the money and I didn't pay anything near £800

Shop around its well worth it.

Ceramic Coatings are fantastic.
They keep the car cleaner for longer, make it easier to wash and dry, help maintain a fresh glossy finish and keep swirls and light scratches at bay.

There are other coatings out there that are worth looking at.
Ceramic Pro, Gyeon, Kamakazi are a few smile
As said, £800 sounds like the dealership are getting a mark up on the work.
