Prodrive 550 Maranello: Pic Of The Week

With Le Mans just a few weeks away, what better time to celebrate a forgotten Ferrari sportscar?

Ask people to think of the great GT Ferraris and a few familiar names will surely come up: 250 GTO, 275 GTB, Daytona. From the illustrious front-engined V12 annals at least, it will probably be a while before the 550 Maranello is mentioned.

Which we thought was rather a shame. Sure, it was a Prodrive run car rather than a factory effort, but it did secure a GT win at Le Mans in 2003. It also looked brilliant and sounded, well, here's the noise that the sole converted road car made. Fairly special, no?

This image comes from the 2003 American Le Mans Series, with the big Ferrari on the way to a GTS class win at Elkhart Lake. And while it may not be the red Ferrari race car people will immediately think of, we think it makes for an awesome wallpaper. Get downloading now!

Not sure the one in the video link was a converted race car rather a regular 550 wearing the Prodrive mods and a straight through exhaust.

As a side note afaik all of the Prodrive race cars were built from second hand road 550's brought directly from dealerships

Been trying to find an article I remember reading years ago about Prodrive making some road going versions but haven't been able to. Did find this though which would suggest the idea was at least taken on in some capacity. I wonder how many were built and I wonder how many folks would pounce on the chance to build one now for a mere 90K on top of the price of a 550?

Thats lovely, but not a Prodrive one. I believe its one of the lesser N-Technology developed ones, perhaps evenm this one:

There is a good article on the Prodrive/Care Racing F550's here: http://archive.dailysportscar.com/subscribers/hist...

It was in EVO, and it's one of my all time favourite cars.

I remember the Le Mans 24 win very well. The Prodrive Ferrari was so far in the lead, they brought the car in to wash it on the penultimate lap, so it was nice and clean when crossing the finish line.
