RE: Hakosuka in South Africa: Time For Tea
Tuesday 18th July 2017
When thinking of the custodians of the world's biggest and best car collections, names like Jay Leno, Nick Mason, Ralph Lauren and Jay Kay are the sort that usually spring to mind. But with a collection of over 100 Datsun and Nissan models, South African timber merchant Freek de Koch has to be included alongside the greats. His haul includes a number of significant models including the 1200GX, 280ZX and 240Z, as well as a few curios, like a Nissan President owned by an actual African president. It is also home to an incredible six GT-Rs, one of which is the focus of the video we have for you today.
Hakosuka in South Africa: Time For Tea?
Just how did one of the best kept Hakosukas in existence end up in Africa?
You see, Freek's Hakosuka isn't just noteworthy as a near perfect example of the car, it also happens to be the only one in all of Africa. The beautifully shot film focusses on just how, having first started his collection over 15 years ago, Freek managed to finally get his hands on the car. He talks about the process of acquiring it, its heritage, and how people react to seeing it in person. There doesn't seem to be much chance of that for us, but we certainly hope to see more of his epic collection in future!

I'll leave this here for some more bemusement of the Hakosuka. It does sound exhilarating for being "only" a 2L I6.

I must admit I prefer the one owned by the Japanese Priest.

Another great collection in South Africa is at the Franschoek Motor Museum link at www.fmm.co.za the collection is well over 400 cars strong and they rotate the collection through the display buildings that are open to the public. Museum is located on the owners wine farm, private race track on the property as well.

What a car I've always liked these, I geeked out when I saw it in a fast & furious (I can't remember which one) film.
Hopefully I'm not spoiling your fond memories by telling you that the one you saw in F&F was a pretend one, based on a lesser model and with a much later 4 cylinder engine... ecksjay said:

few years back, sure. these days, nope. mad buying in USA for 20yr + old cars has gone bonkers.PZR said:
It's the prices in Japan that are the key factor. The very best S20-powered cars have tended to change hands privately, or through marque/model specialists. The relatively recent phenomenon of interest from outside Japan (these models were never exported officially when new) is a drop in the ocean in terms of volume. 99.5% of the cars are still in Japan.
True, it's more the R32 parade that's gone nuts, although it does and will extend to other marques/models in part. Rarely see these outside of japan and those that are have generally been negotiated in person from what I understand.Closest I ever found were these, but most are replicas sadly

Was hoping to see you in here. How's your KPGC10 'club racer' been? Will you be at the Revival this year by any chance, would love to be able to finally see it in the flesh!
