A call to TV geeks.

I have a relatively new Sony and Samsung 'smart' TVs. The Sony user interface is terrible compared to the Samsung but are other brands better than Samsung..?

I've not seen one I prefer to the Samsung, but I have been using 2016 models, not 2017.

The strange thing is I really like the Android interface on my Nvidia Shield, but can't get used to using the very similar one to control my Sony TV!

I really rate the Samsung Smart TV interface, it is brilliant. Also have a Panasonic, which is much simpler & less impressive - very 'dumb' it in just showing static icons you choose between.

As per image below, on the Samsung you can literally adjust the bottom ribbon so it has everything you need in one simple interface. Sky (or the HDMI it is connected via), Netflix, Amazon, Youtube, HDMI2, HDMi 3 etc etc - all as easy to switch between as changing a channel.

All can be 'previewed' as you browse what to watch just be hovering over them, and all can be moved around based on your priorities.

I have not lived with the one Sony interface, though did want one (because Android) until I found the Samsung....

The LG in our spare room seems simple enough - it's a ribbon
We use an Amazon stick for the main telly, so that doesn't count wink

Warning for Samsung...

They are really suck at post sale use.

Mine is 2 years old. It doesn't do all YouTube formats a anymore. Twitter and Skype are no longer supported. Certain weblayouts make the browser crash. Sadly, this includes the 2 websites i want to use most - if live stream and live timing are on the same web page it can't deal with it at all.

Pretty poor for a 2 year old telly.

Smart TVs are a stupid idea.

As stated up thread support ends for apps, interfaces are clunky etc.

Would be better if they stopped building it into TVs (and spent the money saved on decent speakers) and people just add AppleTV, Firestick etc which are easily upgradeable, much more slick

Pretty much agree, except for the speakers which are pointless as people just add a surround system, I'd rather have a lower price TV.

So far no problems with my LG they are good with updates and it's a lot more integrated than a stick.

LG's WebOS always seems to be praised as the best from what I've seen. The motion remote pointer is actually seamless even though it sounds terrible. It's quick, simple and you only have to interact with the bits you want, I hate ones that cover the screen too much or keep pushing stuff you don't want to use. Main downside is there's an advert on the screen but to be honest I only use it to switch between apps/inputs, which are all seen as one thing, which effectively they are IMO.

I have a late 2016 Sony 55" XD93 which is Android-based and the smart menu stuff is crap. However, I never use that side of things (and I knew it was crap before I purchased it) so it's not a consideration for me. The Sony panel was better in most other areas imo.

The nicest interface I've used having also used Samsung and LG was the LG.

Didn’t really play with the others in the shop but the way the pointer is orientated and easy to re centre etc. very good with LG. Sounds trivial but makes it easy to use.

No effort to pick the input or function.

When they do 4k, then I will look at it again but it did look easy.

It's the sort of the thing that sounds rubbish but is pretty seamless to use. Saying that I don't use it as I have a Harmony remote so never use it.

I know some people complain their smart TVs take a while to boot up, which is no issue with my LG. I guess it's dependant on the chipset running it as well as the OS though.
