Pub2Pub - the adventure continues

With 6,000 miles of the epic TVR adventure complete, PH checks in with the Pub2Pub team

You know you're on a big trip when you have to smash out over 3,500 miles just to get to your start point, but that's exactly what the Pub2Pub Expedition were faced with earlier this month. First there was the small matter of a seven day, 2,800-mile drive to reach northern Norway, after which a mixture of plane and boat travel took the team to the planet's northernmost bar, located only 700 miles from the North Pole, in an abandoned Soviet-era mining settlement on the Svalbard Archipelago.

There are worse views in the world!
There are worse views in the world!
From Svalbard, all roads lead south. A long way south in Pub2Pub's case, given journey's end is the planet's southernmost licensed premises, tucked away in deepest Patagonia. So far, the expedition has made it back through Europe to the UK, from where the Chimaera is currently being shipped over to New York to continue the journey down through the Americas. So how is the mighty piece of Blackpool engineering fairing so far?

Well, with over 6,000 miles already under its belt in the first month, it's fair to say it's doing a pretty good job of dispelling the reputation these classic TVRs have for reliability. Breakdowns? None. Well, none for the TVR anyway, though the expedition has been through three different support vehicles so far...

And the highlights? Well the trip hasn't been short of those. From looking out for polar bears in the high Arctic to dropping into the Koenigsegg factory, Pub2Pub's European leg hasn't been short of stand-out moments, which you can read more about on the expedition's blog.

The adventure is all set to resume when Pub2Pub hits the road across the USA in mid August, and we're looking forward to seeing how the TVR fares as it crosses the new world...

Thanks, adventures don't get much more quintessentially British!

The full-fat video content from the expedition will be rolling soon, but until then, here is a montage of what we've been up to on the Euro leg of the trip...

Brilliant! If you go that far South as planned, you must go to the Falklands. There are at least three pub licenced there. Feel free to email me if need any info on helpful contacts down there (including shipping contacts)

My cap is well and truly doffed, Sir!
Reminds me of my old Chimera, which was BRG with a dark green hood and, unbelievably (considering the wonderful engine / exhaust sounds) a fantastic sound system.
The only things I would have changed on mine for a long-distance journey, were the seats (possibly for a Tuscan pair) and the wipers, which I always found missed part of the screen near the drivers windscreen pillar.
Non-TVR owners find it hard to believe that they are actually reliable, if looked after, and quite rugged, and hopefully your epic journey will prove the nay-sayers wrong!

Fantastic effort! As others have said good advert for Britain.

Seems a bit ironic that the support car failed so early on, so 1-0 to the TVR so far, hope it keeps it up. Wasn't the K10 mentioned in another thread about which car you would choose to do huge miles in without bothering to service it? Er...LOL.

Agreed ... this is a great feat (just like previous journeys) and I can't wait to hear the South America encounters!

I don't understand why this doesn't get more interest on here, it's a hugely entertaining trip in a totally unsuitable car, by an amateur with a screw loose. Post up some Manufacturer's poxy hatchback attempting yet another bloody 'ring laptime and there's endless debate... sigh.

Agree, road trip threads are the best thing to read here.

Spectacular - although I thought you'd take the cars to Pyramiden - I guess you left them in Norway for that part of the trip?
Thanks for the kind words everyone!

We looked into taking the cars to Svalbard, but in the end, it was going to cost thousands to get them shipped to Longyearbyen, where the only 20km of roads on the entire archipelago are located, and it's both impossible and illegal to drove from there to Pyramiden. So in the end, we decided that blowing the expedition budget simply to park the TVR on the quay and take a photo wasn't really worth it, hence leaving the cars in Tromso...

Hi there,

We're starting in New York, before heading down to Washington, then the vague route goes down through the Appalacians, then to Bowling Green Kentucky, then Nashville, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, through the national parks to Vegas, on to San Francisco, then down to Mexico... that just about covers it!

Glad to hear it!

The expedition's facebook page is the best place to follow things closely - we put all the content from across the various sites covering the trip there: www.facebook.com/pub2pubexpedition

Also, we have live satellite tracking running here: www.pub2pubexpedition.com/track

And I'll pop back to this thread from time to time with updates - enjoy!

Bon voyage. I'm in the top right hand corner of the US at roughly the same time as you, I think, I wonder if our paths will cross. Happy to smuggle over any TVR spares needed, as long as they fit in a condom and can be swallowed...
Ideal, we could do with a new rear damper - that's easily swallowable, right?! wink

We're in New York from around the 11th to 15th August, then heading off in a Washington direction. Give us a shout if our paths are crossing...

Hi folks,

Sorry for the radio silence - Pub2Pub has been filming in Cuba for the past week, with virtually no internet access. It's been a fun week though, in which we got behind the wheel of a variety of vehicles, ranging from the only Studebaker on the island (a magnificent beast from 1950, still running it's original 3.1l V8, albeit with a Soviet truck carb and the cooling system from a Mercedes Sprinter!), to a 650cc Polski Fiat 126, which we were running around Havana in on Friday morning, and cost it's owner $7,000 USD, such is the balance between supply and demand when it comes to cars there...

Cuba is truly an amazing petrolhead's retreat in the Caribbean, and I implore you to visit if you get the chance - the cars alone are worth the journey.

There's some more pics from our time in Cuba here, if you're interested: https://www.facebook.com/Pub2PubExpedition/posts/1...

We're in New York now, and should have the TVR on the road in the US in the next few days, ready for its trip across the Americas - exciting times!

Updates? Well it's currently 25 degrees and chucking it down here in New Jersey, and I'm already tired of hearing the phrase 'nice Porsche' being drawled in my direction... that pretty much covers it, right?

More seriously, after 6 days in the New York area, we picked up the TVR from the port yesterday; it's now fully legal and on the road in the US. Driving it roof down past the Statue of Liberty yesterday, with the Manhatten skyline filling the skyline, was certainly one of my more memorable road trip moments...

We're still delayed however, as our friends are currently trying to buy a 2011 Crown Victoria to join the convoy, but are being held up in completing the deal by the garage completing some work on the airbag system. Fingers crossed we'll be on the road today, heading to Tenessee area for a total solar eclipse on Monday.

When I said we were picking up a Crown Victoria... I lied.

All hail the Micra's American replacement - a Dodge Charger support vehicle, complete with a 5.7l V8:

We've been on the road in the US for a few days now, and are almost 1,000 miles into our Americas leg, having reached Bowling Green, Kentucky - home of the Corvette factory & museum. The TVR is running well on a diet of Shell VPower 93 and a shot of octane booster, and yesterday's eclipse was frankly awesome.

All in all, life on Pub2Pub is pretty sweet right now...

Greetings from Texas!

Over 8,000 miles driven across 9 countries so far, and the biggest issue the TVR's had is a cracked headlamp lens - we're all seriously impressed with this car.

We're keeping the regular updates rolling over on the Pub2Pub Expedition Facebook page, but if you're sufficiently PH that you won't go near said site, here's a taster of what we're up to - our prime slice of British beef near Amarillo yesterday:
