If the assailant has been arrested, and is subsequently charged/convicted, there'll be compo, right?

The area I presently live in has a social media page, through that I noticed a GFM request for some money to enable a Mum and Dad to by some piece of equipment their disabled child desperately needed. Not a huge sum needed, about £1500. This was duly raised inside a couple of weeks. The equipment was ordered and duly delivered. Photos all over social media, those who donated no doubt felt good about it. Until someone pointed out a that two weeks after the money had been raised Mummy went away for a one week cookery course. Then, after that they had a family holiday abroad. Then daddy, being a keen cyclist bought a new bike.

Unsurprisingly the locals sympathetic attitude change to one of almost hate. They tried to justify there reasoning for the crowd funding approach. They seemed to have no idea where they went wrong!

I was just going to say something similar. I've seen it many times on social media where someone self employed needs to raise money to "make and print new bags", "equipment needed" and then in the next month they are going abroad on holiday. I'm not saying that they are using the money for a holiday, just that if they really needed the money for their money making project, you could have sacrificed the holiday.

I've seen it on here too...someone setting up a fund for another PH'ers car that's gone pop. Shorly afterwards, he buys a few cars and then a house. Obviously not with the amount raised, but evidently in a financial situation that didn't warrant accepting money from strangers. He didn't initialte it, but I would be embarrassed and politely decline such an offer.

Amazes me how some people think something like £10 a month for insurance is a waste of money, I guess they just think..wont happen to me!

My home contents insurance on my 2 bed rented property is £8.12 pm, this gives me enough cover to replace everything in the house in the event of a fire or flood, I've only ever claimed once; 10 years ago when we were burgled but I would never not have it.

It is sad what has happened to that family, a fire must be devastating and if people want to donate then fine, it's up to them, does annoy me though that people don't cover themselves, it's the same with life insurance.

I remember working in a now minimum wage call centre doing low level IT stuff and these begging e-mails would come around from the big wigs down in head office.

They were rolling around in BMW M cars and new Audi tractors but they were asking the poor (us) to fund their Everest base camp expeditions.

This article recently popped up on the BBC website:

Cancer crowdfunding 'couldn't save my daughter'

Have seen a few of these on Facebook recently - it's usually friends of friends and whilst the circumstances are tragic and extremely sad the type of treatments that people are raising money for are bordering on quackery.

Spent £20k on an M5 with a dodgy warranty; engine went pop but the warranty didn’t cover it. Rather than fixing the car he started legal action and somehow got to £90k in debt. Wants 8.5k to get him out of a hole:

Two of the young guys my age in the office are planning some sort of volunteering-holiday-dossing around thing to South Africa. The kind of thing you spend £6k to go on and build a house for a week, then just have fun for the rest of the 5 weeks.

They've been setting up a gofundme thing this morning that they are planning on sending out to everyone, as it's an expensive scheme, and they need to take a lot of un-paid leave. Can't wait for that email to go out hehe
Had exactly the same at my old place

Except it was the hr manager and she wanted 6 weeks

We were only allowed two weeks max, no matter what the circumstances

Got to the 2nd paragraph on that and saw where it came from... not surprised.

Trouble with all these gofundme requests is they always want to have their cake and eat it. Not sure what the going rate for an "engineless" M5 is, but surely if you're hard up you cut your losses and get rid of it for a bit of cash...?

I've just thought of a way to clear all the crap my wife's accumulated from the house once and for all and save a little bit of money.

Yes its PH and we like to mock and belittle anyone who cannot buy a brand new car for cash - but some people (usually, but not exclusively, women) do come out of abusive relationships (hard in the first place) without a pot to piss in - and if their husband (usually but not exclusively it is a husband) has been even a bit controlling they will have ZERO credit history or financial ability of their own.

When they say 'make a home' - rather than silly stencils to write 'love, life, laughter' on the wall - they usually just mean 'a bed for the kids', 'a sofa', 'a working stove'

My fiance works with enough of them, and there really is no short term help, and charity is their only hope.

Once in a while PH should stop sneering at others for fun and get their head out of the bubble.
She wants £300 to make her home "look nice" and regards this as an "emergency"

She has a roof over her head, the emergency part is over...

A 'respectable' person, that she claims to be, wouldn't dream of airing their laundry in public neither. They would seek help from their own network or even go to citizens advice and so on.

I'd be happy to help, she can come paint my fencing, I will pay a decent rate and she will feel more selfworth and proud of earning money and proud of her nice looking house.

She could offer to do peoples laundry / ironing / house cleaning, that would be better than begging no.
