McLaren P1 turns five: Pic of the Week

We've driven the world's most famous P1 on the road - here's your desktop preview!

In 2012 the motoring world was astounded when McLaren revealed the P1 concept, and even more so when an almost unchanged production version emerged at Geneva just a few months later.

375 models were built including P1 OOV, the most famous of the bunch being showcased on multiple magazine covers as well as on this site. As part of the celebration, journalists were allowed to drive the prototype (then press car) on track and on road; now with over 20,000 miles, the car has an incredible history and a wonderful patina (because that's what you call a valuable car with scuffs and marks). It's also perhaps the most valuable P1 around, though McLaren says it will never sell...

However, the high mileage and hard usage appear to have not aged the car at all. It still looks absolutely stunning and incredibly purposeful in Race Mode, especially in this side on view.

It's great to see it clocking miles - I really hope other P1's out there are achieving decent mileages.

Had the "pleasure" of seeing this very car hoofing it past me on the M56 a few years back, tailgated no less by a fiat van.

Hate to be a pedant but whoever who wrote the article can't possibly be unaware the above isn't quite correct. It's 375 + various pre production cars like P1 OOV, majority of which were sold by the factory....

Cheers PH!

As much as I loved loved loved my F1, this has now taken it's spot.

Made me think though, anyone know the reason why they never made it central seated position in the P1?

You can tell it's 5 years old - collapsed suspension, wing stuck in "up" position... Shame people don't maintain their cars.

What a great time to be alive for hypercars and hot hatches. Sure some could argue that they're not as good as some older ones in some way, but the amount we have around is fantastic. Just waiting for those numbers to come up...

I prefer the ethos and execution of the F1, but as a product of our times it is sensational and I've still never seen one in the wild
