Silverstone Auctions Race Retro preview

From a Group A Subaru Legacy to Rowan Atkinson's 500E, here's what we'd be bidding on!

Race Retro will again be hosting two auctions at Stoneleigh Park on February 23rd - 25th, selling off some impressive bits of automotive sporting history and equally inspiring road cars.

In the Competition Car sale, one of the more important Subarus in existence, this Legacy RS was the first to utilise the flat-4 boxer engine and was at the forefront of Subaru's rise to prominence - Colin McRae securing both his first British title in and his first WRC win in one. Richard Burns and Ari Vatanen are great names also associated with the Legacy RS, the latter leading the 1993 Acropolis rally in his before it was badly damaged in a crash. It has since been restored to the same gravel rally specification as that very same rally though, with the same ECU map, having only covered 80 miles since its restoration. The price to get your hands on this coveted Subaru? Estimates between £120,000 - £140,000.

From Group A to Group B homologation, this Ford RS200, chassis #53 of 90, has had only two owners since 1987, both Ford dealers. Under FIA rules, 200 road-goingRS200s were supposed to be built, however Group B reached its end before Ford completed the allocated numbers. This car has been meticulously taken care of and with only 8,876 miles it is aching to be driven, but will likely instead make a perfect acquisition for a Ford collector (estimate £120,000 - £150,000).

Something a little more cosseting perhaps? The Lancia Thema 8.32 Series 1 or Mercedes 500E both of which sport rare cloth interiors and are being offered without reserve. They're also both previously owned by actor and famed car enthusiast Rowan Atkinson, who chose them due to their rarity and overall condition.

Onto something a little more curio in this Lamborghini DL20-2241R, said to be Ferruccio's favourite tractor and one elected to lead the funeral parade, towing his casket through the streets of Perugia upon his death. This tractor has had a full nut and bolt restoration and is offered with photographic documentation and a NOVA number for registration. If Ferruccio's other offerings are more favourable, pay attention to one of the first right-hand drive Lamborghini Jalpas, number 46 off the production line. Built to compete with Enzo Ferrari's 308, this Jalpa was restored in 2013 with an estimate of £65,000 to £75,000.

There is plenty more to choose from, of course, with the full lot list available here for your perusal.

You have got a bit confused ?
Ford physically sold 146 RS 200's.
Others were stripped for parts support / not completed. I don't think the 146 would include the works team cars either.
"There were only 90" can't be correct !

You are indeed correct - it was meant to read 90 that were converted to road specification.

Does anyone else think the legacy sounds steep at £120-140,000 given that its had no wins and its had 3 body shells (including being ran as an impreza), or am i missing something? Admittedly ive not seen anything to compare it to recently

Got quite excited when we parked next to this in Spain last year...

Covered in dust, I thought it had been abandoned, however later that afternoon, we saw an old lady driving it.

Apart from it being in the OP sub-heading, further mentioned in the text and that they've even included a photograph, you make a very good point wink

Can the auction listing for the Lancia be correct?

I know it says "less than 20 cars currently registered and taxed according to the DVLA"......but that implies there may be 19 of them in roadworthy conditon.

That's a good thing cool

The guide prices for the RS200 and Cosworth seem almost sensible compared to how the market has ben recently
Id love to know how much they actually sell for

For those interested, the E500 sold at £71,300, the RS200 sold in excess of the guide figure at £157,500 and the Legacy didn’t sell.

Classic car results here:

Competition car results here:

A good few of them went for less than I was expecting.

Some of them did seem to go for a cheaper price than we've come to expect in the last couple of years.
Has the classic car world bubble had a slight pin prick?
