Showpiece of the Week: McLaren MSO HS

Missed out on a Senna? There's another hyper-exclusive, track-focussed McLaren you can buy...

When McLaren established its Special Operations division in 2011, its original mission was to help extremely wealthy individuals create bespoke versions of their already expensive and limited supercars. This was all well and good, of course - and highly profitable - but fancy paint and new trim materials were never going to be the limit of its aspirations. The MSO HS (for High Sport), which applied P1 GTR components to a limited run of 675LTs, was indicative of its long-term goals.

The much admired M838T 3.8-litre V8 was tweaked, outputting a massive 688hp and 516lb ft at 7,000rpm. Along with the added power, the HS was put on a diet, stripping 19kg from its kerb weight. Carbon fibre has been used on the front bumper, splitter, side skirts, side intakes, rear diffuser and engine bay, as well as those dive planes up front. There is a race-inspired carbon fibre snorkel, the roof is... yep, you guessed it, and there is a massive GT3-spec active rear wing that helps generate 220kg of downforce at 150mph.

MSO didn't stop there, though - much like a boxer before weigh in, it went to every length to keep the weight down, even claiming fitment of the lightest possible windscreen. The P1's carbon fibre seats with four-point harnesses found a place in the cabin as well as a full McLaren Track Telemetry package that deployed three cameras. You know, just in case you want to show your friends how cool you were on that track day.

Only 25 were ever created, and they were snapped up before the car was even revealed to the public. It is therefore easy to see why this car, chassis #007, is up for sale at a snip under £800,000. A number of options were fitted to this car - a lot of which include the words carbon fibre. In this price range, there is very little that can compete with the 688HS. You could save £100,000 and buy a Ferrari 599 GTO or a Porsche Carrera GT. Neither is as limited, or as poised around a circuit, though.

"When MSO decided to go hard instead of home..."

I suppose it makes a nice change that their cars can actually get more than a hundred miles without breaking down. Formula 1 has been such an embarrassment for the brand. I cant even look at a McLaren these days without laughing.

That’s so 2017, McLaren finished a heady 5th the other weekend.

Agreed, that the last few years have damaged the F1 brand but it was pretty obvious it was the Honda donkey responsible.

Poor Ferrari F1 results never hurt their road car sales and when Alonso won 2 world championships with Renault, their road cars sales actually declined (in the UK at least).

Funny business F1

That said, a lot of people take what they see in F1 at face value. Many will see Aston Martin logo’s plastered all over the Redbull and think Aston had something to do with the car.
Same people probably laugh when they see a McLaren road car... wink

Its lovely and Id have had one in a heartbeat if I had the cash and Ron had let me

However its hard to overlook a McLaren main dealer offering a 675LT Spider for sub 300k with sub 1k miles on the clock when this costs 800, anyone know how much they cost new? The price has defeated by own Google skills

Cheers

I've read much talk about the 2018 integration side with Honda being smoother than it was with McLaren last year. Some people believe there were problems on both sides.

Nice attempt at deflection though.

Remind me, in the last decade or so, when was the last time McLaren won anything significant in F1? 2008 with Lewis. And since you've chosen to make comparisons to Redbull, how do they compare? 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 with Sebastian.

Maybe next time you want to raise a point, you could try to raise one that actually reinforces your own argument instead of shooting yourself in the foot.

McLaren are an embarrassment, and their results will linger long in the memory of everyone who saw Alonso getting some rays while his McLaren was an overpriced paperweight parked up when others were racing. An absolute joke of a company who couldn't organise a pissup in a brewery.

Do you really want a refresher of all the "complimentary" things Alonso said? Regardless of whether you believe it was the donkey in the back, you would have to ask how such an esteemed company got themselves into that mess in the first place, and why they took so long to extricate themselves. They STILL have no chance in the foreseeable future, and will need to tear everything down and rebuild.

And I very much doubt that other teams will be standing still allowing them to play catch up.

What a joke of a company, and what a failure of leadership.

You obviously did not watch pre season testing then, which car was the most unreliable and did least laps? Honda STR did far more. The Mclaren does seem to have more pace now, it will be interesting to see how the season progresses.

Blimey, a lot of rage there.
I’d send your CV into Woking post haste.

Pay all that extra money for what? A different paint and some rice-up? It’s for the price of a Senna. How about this, get a 720s and save the cash for another 720s for someone special, and you still have lots of money left over for vacation, wedding, honeymoon etc.

Those in the market for an MSO HS, a Senna or two 720s wouldn’t have to worry about finding money for a vacation, wedding, honeymoon etc.
All you’re really saying is if it was your money the HS isn’t for you.
Riced up? You could say that about any of the ‘specials’ from the manufacturers wink

They were also offered to preferred customers, so i guess mclaren knew they would have not have to dig behind the sofs for the money and had a number of McLarens already. A nice addition to the collection
